Definition of Nursing and the "14 Components of Nursing Care"

Virginia Avenel Henderson

(1897-1996)

“First Lady of Nursing”

“First Truly International Nurse”

“The nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind, a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the mother, the mouthpiece for those too weak or withdrawn to speak and so on.”

Life Story

Born in Kansas City, Missouri on Nov. 30, 1897, the 5th of eight children of Daniel B. and Lucy Minor (Abbot) Henderson. Her father was an attorney for Native American Indians. Her mother came from the state of Virginia to which Miss Henderson returned for her early schooling.

World War I developed her interest in nursing in 1918.

She was educated at the U.S. Army School of Nursing (1921) then worked as a staff nurse of the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City.

1922, began teaching in Norfolk Protestant Hospital, Virginia.

1929, teaching supervisor in the clinics of Strong Memorial Hospital, Ronchester, New York.

Teachers College, Columbia University where she completed her B.S. (1932) and M.A. in education (1934), then taught from 1934 until 1948.

As a researcher, writer and author:

  1. Bertha Harmer’s Textbook of the Principles and Practice of Nursing, 4th edition, 1939.
  2. Bertha Harmer’s Textbook of the Principles and Practice of Nursing, 5th edition, 1955, contains her definition of nursing.
  3. Basic Principles of Nursing Care, 1960.
  4. The Nature of Nursing, 1966.
  5. The Principles and Practice of Nursing, 6th edition, 1978.

In 1953, she joined Yale School of Nursing.

Mary Adelaide Nutting Award from the US National League for Nursing

Fellowship of the American Academy of Nursing

Honorary Membership in the London Association of Integrated and Degree Courses in Nursing

Fellowship in the Royal College of Nursing in England

1983, Sigma Theta Tau International’s Mary Tolle Wright Founders Award for Leadership, one of the honor society’s highest honors.

1988, ANA citation

She recognized early on the importance of an outcomes orientation, health promotion, continuity of care, patient advocacy, multidisciplinary scholarship, integration of the arts and sciences, and boundary spanning.

Her elegant definition of nursing, with its emphasis on complementing the patient's capabilities, provides a clear direction for what nursing should be.

With her silky drawl, bright blue eyes, wispy curls, and beautiful clothes, Miss Henderson was the embodiment of an impish Southern gentlewoman. She was the most gracious hostess I have ever encountered, and had a wicked sense of humor.

She was the incarnation of those Greek verities--the good, the true, and the beautiful. She was shaped by the aesthetic that produced beautiful surroundings in honey and rose colored tones (she gave up the idea of becoming an interior designer/architect when there was a need for nurses in World War I), as well as elegant arguments embellished by references to a literature much broader than just the nursing literature.

Even when her memory and hearing started to fail, she was not limited, because her curiosity and interest in people elicited from them an engagement in the issues that then set in motion her own creative juices.

Virginia Henderson was arguably the most famous nurse of the 20th century. Because that was the case, Sigma Theta Tau's International Nursing Library bears her name. She was only willing to permit use of her name if the electronic networking system to be developed would advance the work of staff nurses by getting to them current and jargon-free information wherever they were based.

Died on March 19, 1996 at the age of 98, after partaking chocolate cake and ice cream and saying goodbyes to her family and friends. A family-sponsored memorial service was held at Battel Chapel on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, CT on May 6 the first day of National Nurses week in 1996. Miss Henderson's family, including her grandniece, Catherine Burdge, who is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Virginia Henderson Fund, Yale School of Nursing.

An accomplished author, avid researcher and a visionary.

The theory of 14 Basic Human Needs by Virginia Henderson.
These 14 basic human needs are her ideas of how the whole nursing care can be achieved by the patient. Nursing, for her is a helper for the patient to have the faster recovery. Nurses should apply this basic human needs everytime they have duties, so that the patients can complete absorb the nursing care.

It's a wow when i learned that Henderson didn't write this concept to become a theory. It was said that she just did it for the purpose of research. But later, it was made to be a theory.
Virginia HEnderson conceptualized the 14 basic human needs. Humans have many needs but she generalized them into 14. As i memorize the basic needs, it came to me that every personal need that Henderson wrote is essential to human being.
I agreed that Henderson deserves the title of being the "First Truly International Nurse." She toured the whole world to teach about good nursing. I wish I can also tour the whole world because of the the profession i will choose.
Henderson is a great writer and a greater nurse at heart.

It helps me understand that nurses are not ordinary people for they help the patients meet their needs especially what is lacking on them.

her basic componeneets of human needs helps not just the medical team, but also an individual himself to identify what is lacking of him. those are also an axiom but downright true that the individual must posses this needs in able to have an equilibrum. what is also im4tant n her theory is she focuses on person who receives nursing care. and because this theory is basic, the nurse would not have any difficulties in identifying the basic shortage of the patient.
anyway, her theory has something common with maslow's.

Virginia Henderson’s concept of the 14 basic human needs has many influences and theoretical sources from her dean to her professors. Her concept may have some similarities to Maslow’s needs but hers is more specific and is more applicable to the nursing profession. Up to the present, her concept has continued its involvement in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation phases nurses apply to their clients. Starting form the assessment phase, utilizing the concept, the may be able to determine which needs are missing and must be met for the reparative process of the patient,

"14 Basic Needs" is Virginia's theory. It is a definition of nursing, environment, and nursing that considered as a grand theory. Actually it really helps the nurses to take good care of their patients. Her 14 Basic Needs is right that we should observe of our patient meets those needs. If the patient can't get those needs, the nurses must make an action to help her patient to complete those needs. She gives the nurses specific roles and responsibilities. Like fo example the nurse-patient relationship, it has 3 level. First is, nurse a s a substitute for the patient, which means the nurse serves as a replacement as to what the patient lack. Second is the nurse as a helper, where in the patient is helped by the nurse. 3rd is the nurse as a partner with the patient, they are both planning for the good of patient.

Thanks to Henderson for formulating this theory as a guide of nurses.

Virginia Henderson's 14 Components of Basic Nursing Care guides nurses on how to implement a well-organized and consistent nursing care. She inlcuded these important components to be a way or means of providing a quality care that could help an individual achieve the needs to be met. Her definition of nursing capture my attention which made me more intimate in knowing more about the life of these theorist. She describe nursing as a human being who intimately, unconditionally and selflessly gives his/her whole self for the sake of the others' wellness. She concluded the nurses' relation as well which describes the nurse as "one" with the patient. Base on my understanding, she describes the nurse as "one" unified with the patient. They function or work as a whole to gain a better nurse-patient relationship wich leads to great evaluation of needs that are met within thw whole process of caring.

Thank You ma'am for the discussions and examples you have shared with us. It is a great help for us to fully understand these theories. We assure you that your efforts of providing us a better understanding of these lessons is not wasted. God Bless!

And she also explained that the nurse must be the helper, partner, and the substitute for the patient for everything the patient is lacking.

Her achievement in life truly surprised me; she received numerous awards from different institutions. She travels around the world to educate nurses. No wonder why she is the “FIRST LADY OF NURSING and the FIRST TRULY INTERNATIONAL NURSE”
Miss Virginia Avenel Henderson’s The 14 Component of Basic Human Needs contributed a lot in the nursing profession, and without it, it would be hard for us to asses if a person is healthy or not.
She considered person healthy if the person posses the 14 basic human needs, makes sense right? Because if you lack just one of the 14 basic human needs, it really makes you unhealthy.
”I’ve learned lots about how to take care of myself because sometimes I lack some of the 14 basic human needs which make me unhealthy, and also to become independent because sometimes I am not good in decision making so I consult someone for help and being independent is a way to become a good nurse”. One of the characteristic of a nurse is to function independently especially if the physician is not around

Virginia Avenel Henderson, the proponent of "14 Components of Basic Human Needs Theory", was an excellent person. She is also one of the most admired and honored nursing practitioner in the 19th century. "The nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind,a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the mother, the mouthpiece for those too weak or withdrawn to speak and so on.", when you have internalize and understand this phrase, you can fully understand the concept of her theory. Her 14 Components of Basic Needs made a great influence in the nursing education and practice. In my own understanding in this theory, this states that "in order to achieve healthiness, one must have to perform or accomplish the 14 basic needs of a person". Her definitions and the theory are not that hard to understand and it is easy to implement to a person.

Thank you mam oloresisimo for sharing this video........This gives me more information about Ms. Virginia Avenel Henderson..

Henderson defined nursing as doing things for patients that they would do for themselves if they could, that is if they were physically able or had the required knowledge. It helps the patient become healthy or die peacefully, and also helps people work toward independence so that they can begin to perform the activities for themselves as quickly as possible. Henderson focused on the patient. She saw how nursing could focus on the patient, and how it was possible to focus on developing a good nurse-patient relationship. This extremely affected her and she believed strongly that patient-focused nursing was the most helpful kind of nursing for the patient.

.,What is 14 basic human needs? for me as a student of BSN this is the responsibility of the nurse to help both the sick and well individual. Also to help the patient to manage his surroundings to protect him from harm.
She is the health care provider so the nurse must be knowledgeable in both biological and social science s and must have the ability to asses basic human needs.
This 14 Basic Human Needs can help a lot in nursing practice specially for the patient who need this to make them satisfy and healthy. It can help the patient to improve their health Physically,Mentally,Emotionally,Socially, and Spiritually...
