JOYCE TRAVELBEE (Human-to-Human Relationship Model )

JOYCE TRAVELBEE
(1926–1973)
Human-to-Human Relationship Model

“A nurse does not only seek to alleviate physical pain or render physical care – she ministers to the whole person. The existence of the suffering whether physical, mental or spiritual is the proper concern of the nurse.”
- Joyce Travelbee

Life Story
A psychiatric nurse, educator and writer born in 1926.

  • 1956, she completed her BSN degree at Louisiana State University
  • 1959, she completed her Master of Science Degree in Nursing at Yale University

Working Experiences:

  • 1952, Psychiatric Nursing Instructor at Depaul Hospital Affilliate School, New Orleans.
  • Also she taught at Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Louisiana State University, New York University and University of Mississippi.
  • 1970, the Project Director of Graduate Education at Louisiana State University School of Nursing until her death.
Publications:
  • 1963, started to publish articles and journals in nursing.
  • 1966 and 1971, publication of her first book entitled Interpersonal Aspects of Nursing.
  • 1969, when she published her second book Intervention in Psychiatric Nursing: Process in the One-to-One Relationship.

She started Doctoral program in Florida in 1973. Unfortunately, she was not able to finish it because she died later that year. She passed away at the prime age of 47 after a brief sickness.

Theoretical Sources

  • Catholic charity institutions
  • Ida Jean Orlando, her instructor—“The nurse is responsible for helping the patient avoid and alleviate the distress of unmet needs.” The nurse and patient interrelate with each other.
  • Viktor Frankl, a survivor of Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps—proposed the theory of logotherapy in which a patient is actually confronted with and reoriented toward the meaning of his life.

Nursing Metaparadigm
Person
- Person is defined as a human being.
- Both the nurse and the patient are human beings.
- A human being is a unique, irreplaceable individual who is in continuous process of becoming, evolving and changing.

Health
- Health is subjective and objective.
- Subjective health—is an individually defined state of well being in accord with self-appraisal of physical-emotional-spiritual status.
- Objective health—is an absence of discernible disease, disability of defect as measured by physical examination, laboratory tests and assessment by spiritual director or psychological counselor.

Environment
- Environment is not clearly defined.
- She defined human conditions and life experiences encountered by all men as sufferings, hope, pain and illness.

Illness – being unhealthy, but rather explored the human experience of illness

Suffering – is a feeling of displeasure which ranges from simple transitory mental, physical or spiritual discomfort to extreme anguish and to those phases beyond anguish—the malignant phase of dispairful “not caring” and apathetic indifference

Pain – is not observable. A unique experience. Pain is a lonely experience that is difficult to communicate fully to another individual.

Hope – the desire to gain an end or accomplish a goal combined with some degree of expectation that what is desired or sought is attainable

Hopelessness – being devoid of hope

Nursing
- Nursing is an interpersonal process whereby the professional nurse practitioner assists an individual, family or community to prevent or cope with experience or illness and suffering, and if necessary to find meaning in these experiences.”

Human-to-Human Relationship Model
- humanistic revolution

Interactional Phases of Human-to-Human Relationship Model:
1. Original Encounter
- First impression by the nurse of the sick person and vice-versa.
- Stereotyped or traditional roles
2. Emerging Identities
- the time when relationship begins
- the nurse and patient perceives each others uniqueness
3. Empathy
- the ability to share in the person’s experience
4. Sympathy
- when the nurse wants to lessen the cause of patient’s suffering.
- it goes beyond empathy—“When one sympathizes, one is involved but not incapacitated by the involvement.”
- therapeutic use of self
5. Rapport
- Rapport is described as nursing interventions that lessens the patient’s suffering.
- Relation as human being to human being
- “A nurse is able to establish rapport because she possesses the necessary knowledge and skills required to assist ill persons and because she is able to perceive, respond to and appreciate the uniqueness of the ill human being.”

*phases are in consecutive and developmental process.

Logical Form
- An inductive theory that uses specific nursing situations to create general ideas.

Application
Practice:
Hospice – self-actualizing life experience. Assumption of the sick role. Meaning of life and sickness and death.

Education:
Teaches nurses to understand the meaning of illness and suffering.

Research:
Applied in the theory of caring cancer patients.

Analysis
Clarity – is not consistent in clarity and origin.
1. Definition of terms came from dictionaries and books etc.
2. Used different terms for the same definition.
3. Focus more on adult individuals who are sick and the nurse’s role in helping them to find meaning in their sickness and suffering.
4. Deals in families and their needs but not in the community

Simplicity – not simple.
1. Contains different variables.

Generality – has wide scope of application but applicable only to those patients in distress and life changing events.

Empirical Precision – low measures of empirical soundness.
1. Result of lack of simplicity.
2. Defines concepts theoretically but does not define them operationally.
3. The model has not been tested.

Derivable Consequences – development of quality of caring.
1. It is useful because of its ability to describe, explain, predict and control a phenomena.
2. Explains the variables that affect the establishment of a therapeutic relationship between nurses and patients.
3. Lack of empirical precision also creates lack of usefulness.

CANCER... medically termed as CA or cellular aberration is one of the major cause of sufferings and death around the globe. It is cause by a carcinogen (cancer causing agent) and co-carcinogen (required for carcinogen to affect human cell and this was initiated by wrong and faulty lifestyle. A combined of these two produces cancer cell or oncogene which triggers cancerous characteristics by producing protein which accelerates multiplication of cells, increases its responsiveness and growth, thus cancer means any malignant growth in any part of the body which can metastasized or spread all over the body if severe or malignant... But whatever medical terms or meanings have used to refer to cancer, still cancer is a killer. Cancer is fate of hopelessness, a fate of sufferings... a fate of dying and death. It is a traitor, a disease that has been diagnosed on unexpected times when you have nothing to do but to wait for your time.

"It's cancer! The cancer cells have metastasized all over your body and its malignant. A chemotherapy can be of great help but you have nothing to do but to pray... only a miracle can save you ... You have only one short year to live." These were the words have said by my doctor six months ago and now, these are the words that keep on ringing into my ears every time I entered the chemotherapy room. A tinnitus that made me deaf and hopeless.

"Miss, your chemo is finish already, how does it feel? Are you feelin' good?", my chemotherapy nurse said as I replied with a coerce smile. What a question? Everyone knows how difficult it is to undergo chemotherapy, it causes pain and weakness to my body, troubles to my mind and cries to my heart. Those questions should not been asked, the answer is obvious. As my nurse continues, "Miss, its been 6 months of chemotherapy and ... ", I distracted her with my words, "and still I have cancer. 6 months ago, meaning I have 6 more months to wait for my death. What is the purpose of these chemotherapy anyway if still I have to die, this therapy is useless and this made me feel weak. And look at me, I'm dying. I do look like a corpse. My skin is desquamating my hairs begun to fall. Honestly, I started to count my last hair strands." Together with the fall of my hairs are the shattered of my dreams, washed-out of my youth and end of my value into this world. I am like a flamed candle that melts as the hour runs, a cigarette that little by little die and sand in the hour glass that become exhausted. I am useless! I'm just waiting for my death to be valuable. You know how? ... My body could be a great help for worms underground and soil fertilizer for plants and grasses over my tomb." My nurse replied, "Is that the only value you've considered to yourself? And that will gonna happen after your death and besides you are waiting for 6 months to be valuable for worms and plants only. Miss, you have 6 long months more to be valuable while you are living. Why don't you make the most of it? There are so many ways to be valuable, just only take all the opportunities that will knock on your door. Please think about it."

I am very young to die. How cruel of life it could be made me suffered like this way at my early age. On this moment on, I should attend different night life and parties as teenagers usually do. I should go to school and finish my chosen course. Perhaps ... I should be valuable. But this cancer ruined everything, it destroys me!, it destroys my cared beauty, made meweak and useless, made me old and fearful because of my appearance. I started to have bald-headed, my hair started to fall ... how could I go out and roamed around to enjoy my last days here on earth. I don't want to die, I want to become a successful woman, I want to build a big company, to be rich and famous. I want to raise a family of my own. I want to be valuable and fulfilled. Actually, I have so much opportunities to attain all of these, I am an only child of the richest couple in town. I am young, fresh, popular, intelligent and beautiful. But all of these have nothing to do with cancer... all have faded. Before I am a very brave and courageous young lady taking up political science for I want to be a lawyer someday, a fighter fighting for one's right and now I am a useless ill lady whose coward and frightened. I want to fight for my right, my right to live... my right for my life. But fate is so cruel. If s not even, I don't have any armor to fight the battle. If s not right! It is so unfair for not giving me a chance ... a chance to prove something, to be successful, to be fulfilled... to be valuable.

As my car runs along the road on my way back home while having my sensible thoughts, I have witnessed a crime, a victim of hit-and-run. With the help of my personal driver and yaya, we brought this young 20 years old man to the hospital and the surgeon's diagnosis is a simple fracture of the tibial bone of his right leg, lucky for him as a vehicular accident victim. But not 'till he woke up and complained of absence of eyesight or blindness and his opthalmologist found out that fragments of his broken eyeglasses have drawn into his eyes and his doctor suggested evisceration or removal of the contents of the eyeball only living outer sclera and muscle to prevent further spread of infections and complications and to save optical nerves from damage. Michael had underwent an emergency eye surgery and as a result he could not see ... he is totally blind. And the only way for him to see is the eye transplant. I found out that he is living in the squatter's area in Quezon City with his live-in partner Elena, 20 years old and their daughter Michaela Elleine, a 6 months old baby girl. And according to Michael he was on his way searching for a job when the accident happened. Due to early marriage and poverty, I have realized that Michael has nothing to pay for the bills of the hospital so I've decided to have some charitable deeds. After Michael's operation on the same day, I went to his house and I found out that Elena is lying on the bed of sic kness because of her heart ailments which was worsened by her delivery to their first baby. As she discovered what happened to her husband, she experienced difficulty of breathing and chest pain that leads to heart attack and we brought her to the hospital where Michael was confined. And again, I accepted the load of their hospital bills. Michael was very weak and blind, he does not know where is his family located and Elena was still on ICU (Intensive Care Unit) waiting for a heart donor for transplant and she was totally alone for her family was a victim of fire in Tondo two years ago. And Michaela Elleine was left alone like an abandoned child. I have nothing to do but to adopt this little poor child as long as her parents recovered or someone claims her.

I have realized how lucky I am despite of my condition and I am not the only unfortunate person, there are many others whose much worst and unfortunate than me ... much oppressed. With my very young age considering my condition, I started to become an instant mother to an instant baby girl. I have experienced to slept late at night because I have to read her my favorite bedtime stories and to wake in the middle of the night for her bottlefeed milk or changed her diapers. I have witnessed her first crawl, first sit, first stand and first steps which are all missed by her biological mother. And the most heart breaking experience is that when I have heard her voice as she speaks, "Mi-Mi", which I thought its mommy. Her cries serve as sirene which means she needs me and her smile and laughter told me "thank you" , both brings an innate joy to my soul. I have learned a lot from taking good care of her ... I've learned how to become a mother and how I wish to be the one. And now, I know how does my mother feels when I'll pass away and I feel so lonely and sorry for that... but it is our fate.

Everyday after my therapy, together with Michaela we visited her parents and after that is her monthly check-up to her pediatrician.

Days, weeks and months passed rapidly with Michaela, I really forgot about my illness... my cancer and I forgot about dying that I have only remaining 6 months to live. Not until I have noticed the passed of time one day when I woke-up very weak and tired, its hard for me to move and get-up on bed. I feel boneless. My eyes feels so heavy considering that I have a complete hours of sleep and my vision was blurred, I look at the mirror and put-off my wig, I applied some oil on my scalp and removed the sticking fallen hair and I found out that I am bald already, I have few hair strands scattered all over my head and I counted it ... its 31 all in all long hair strands which before long, silky wavy blonde hair naturally. I have remaining 31 days to go. I have realized that its getting nearer, my time is over. 5 very short months passed rapidly and I have still one month to go. Now, I am not thinking about myself anymore, my concerns are all for Michaela and what I have wished for myself is "Please LORD, let me witness Michaela's first birthday."

For 3 weeks, I got busy preparing Michaela's birthday party and of signing different contracts, forms, last will and testaments inspite of my worsen condition because I have so many reasons to be strong and that are my ambitions and dreams to be fulfilled, successful and valuable. And on the first day of my last week, we celebrated Michaela Elleine's first birthday party.

6 days to go before my countdown is over, it seems that its like yesterday that I'm waiting for another 6 months to passed, feel frightened and coward to die trying to push the days ahead. And now again inside of this four-cornered white room in front of my nurse, I put-off my wig and decided to removed it permanently as long as I am living ... for 6 days. I have combed my 6 long hair strands that are tightly attached to my scalp and it seems like me holding so tight for my life. But like my hair strands which falls everyday, I am preparing for my omega. And she asked, "How does it feel?", then I simply smiled at her down to my heart and replied, " I know my time is over ... I have accepted my fate."

I can die now, I am successful and fulfilled. I have proven something to myself and I can say that I am valuable not only for worms and plants but because I have value in the real sense in this world. Considering my age and condition, I am very lucky and too successful for I have attained my dreams. I have built a big building for the needy and for 6 months I have raised a family by helping Michael's family and I become a mother with Michaela. I become an attorney by fighting for the right of Michael's family ... the right to live and the right for life.

LORD is so great to me for giving me such opportunities before of my death. My nurse was right, there are so many ways to be valuable. I gave my light to Michael, the life to Elena and my love and caring to Michaela Elleine. And even when I am on my eternal life, I am sure that I'm still helping so many angels like Michaela, times the thousands of my hair strands fallen with a cause. Because my hair strand is equal to my value into this world and now I am waiting for the fall of my one last hair strand.

"Okay, Miss, if s time for you to sleep and have some rest", my nurse said and then I replied as she holds my hand, "Thank you very much!", with a big smile. And as I closes my eyes, after of a deep breath my last hair strand fall on the floor.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

I, whose name at the undersigned was leaving my both eyes to Michael and my heart to Elena for transplant immediately after my death and I am leaving Medical Plan worth of P l, 000, 000. 00 for their hospitalization.

I am also leaving them P50,000.00 for their wedding and another P50,000.00 for Michaela Elleine's baptismal plus one-fourth of my riches and properties inherited from my parents with an Educational Plan. And the three-fourth will be going to the orphanage I have signed with contract which has to be open soon.

To my parents, I am leaving all of my happiness and memories with you.

To all of you, especially to my nurse, thank you very much for giving me the reason to live and making me valuable.

I'm still impress of Travelbee eventhough she died early, she still contribute a lot by means of her theory,The "Human-to-Human Relationship Model",makes use of sufferings and pain that the patient experiences, especially for those cancer patients. The theory ends the suffering by means of emphaty and symphaty.

Good Evening Maam

Joyce Travelbee(Human to Human Relationship)
Responsibility of a nurses is to teach patient how to accept that he/she is sick. But how sad that a very inspiring theorist like her past away at the early age of 47 without a definite reason of her death. But because of her theory the existence of suffering of the patient, whether physical, mental or spiritual is the proper concern of the patient.THANKS.

I regret that i only read this article after the exam. =(...

Joyce Travelbee, she is different among the theorists that we've tackled. She is quite unusual in a way, because she was not famous while she lived. Her career only started after she died.

But though she died early, she made great contribution in nursing profession, she's more of.."less about the theorist and more about the theory". The theory she made was remarkable. Her human-to-human relationship model helps nurses to have good interaction and relationship with the patient.

--->>THE LAST HAIR STRAND<<---

Honestly, at first I thought that this story is mostly usual dramas I've read before. But when I read it, I thought that I was wrong for judging it so quickly because the story is very inspiring and very hearth-warming. I like the flow of the story, it was very captivating and what more can i say..I'm nearly speechless. Two-thumbs up ma'am.

It is quite related to Joyce Travelbee because they gave big contributions to different individuals, they gave hope to those that seems to be hopeless. To best describe this is like the quote in the movie, wherein it stated "DEATH IS ONLY THE BEGINNING" (The Mummy movie,1999) because both of them had changed and improved lives even after their death.

Joyce Travelbee always tackle about sufferings, pain, ilness hopelessness.. etc. i wonder why she think life is all about the pains and sufferings in the environment. but because of this, she showed that the cancer patient must have hope even though he/she knows he/she is dying because the pain they feel is a way of saying that theres a wonderful life/experience behind the pain they really feel.. and she taught us how we should value simple things that a simple sufferings cant destroy.

This article is great!
We need to have good relationship to all the peoples we encounter. A person must enjoy his/her life. No one can predict what will gonna happen. whatever happens, it happens for a reason. like from the novel the last hair strand, even the patient suffer painful series of chemotherapy, her life became meaningful for her organs are used by recepient, like Travelbee who died in an early age. Her theory can be used nowadays for having a good relationship with others.
Thank you ma'am for posting this article1 I learned a lot!

Human-to-human relationship model made me learned that we need to have a good relationship with others. From the novel last hairfall, it explains that even life is too short, we can have best experiences from the encounter you have with other persons. let's not be hopeless if we are in that situation but be glad because it happens for a reason.

The Human-to-Human Relationship model of Joyce Travelbee is very important and useful in nursing because it is the relationship between the nurse and the patient.
It is very helpful in human being. It emphasized that nursing care needed a "humanistic revolution". The nurse and patient should interrelate with each other even though their not know each other to have a good recovery. And the purpose of the nurse is to assist an individual, family, and community to prevent and cope with the experience of illness and suffering. It helps us to appreciate the uniquness of the ill human being and to understand the meaning of illness and suffering.

When I read "The Last Hair Strand", I feel sad and my heart melted but I also inspired because there are many people who are willing to help others even though they did'nt know them. The story is full of suffering, pain, illness and most of all love. The character is so amazing, she is really a good and smart person. And I know that God have plan to her. Everything happen for a reason. It is very wonderful and amazing story. I enjoy it very much....

Thank you ma'am for the wonderful and inspiring story.... God Bless..

Joyce Travelbee's life ended short yet she had made wonderful contribution to nursing profession which is the human-to-human relationship model. It tackles how the nurse helps the patient recover from illness by means of therapeutic use of himself/herself. I'm just wondering why Travelbee identifies her environment as experiences of men as sufferings hope pain and illness.

The story entitled "The Last Hair Strand" was so inspiring. Despite the condition of having a cancer, the character manages to make her life to the fullest with the aid of her nurse. She was so fulfilled when she passed away because of the good deeds she has done. A very touching story that deserves to win the gold! =)

Taking good care of the sick person does not only need to lessen the pain that is observable, but it is necessary to cure the person as a whole.and this was explained by Joyce Travelbee's human-to-human relationship model.

after reading the story entitled"the last hair strand",something came out of my mind.God created us because each and eveyone of us has its own purpose why we live.so,if we encounter an experience that challenge us,we should not give up!

Joyce travelbee's theory the human to human relationship model teaches us the importance of nurse-patient relationship. Most of Travelbee's work has pain, suffering and hopelessness. also it is much more focused on the cancer patients. Her theory shows that we ,in general, should learn how to accept our condition. Just like what Joseph Newton said,"we cannot tell what may happen to us in the strange medley of life. but we can decide what happens in us, how we take it, what we do with it- and that is what really counts in the end."

The story of "THE LAST HAIR STRANDS" is so meaningful and touches anybody"s heart because it tells how important of life to everyone. The relationship between the nurse and the patient...the patient(the lady w/ no hair) and Michael's family shows the human-to-human relationship formulated by Joyce Travelbee. In this story you can say that suffering is so hard but if you look in the right side, you can see life's true value.Everyone has their own way of living life...life must go on,and we should be thankful because God lend life to us.

The life story of Joyce Travelbee was unique. Her life was different to other theorist. She didn't experience to become famous because she died at an early age. She didn't feel the happiness of being famous and she didn't feel her awards and all of her achievements. And I saw that her life was not colorful and meaningful. I felt her sadness because in her theory, "Human to Human Relationship Model" is all about negative like pain, hopelessness, illness, suffering, etc. But her theory had a great contribution to nursing profession and also we can apply it to our daily living. I really admire her because in her theory she taught us how to be strong, to accept all the things that happened in our life. She reminds us that everything happens for a reason. And that's the best lesson that i learned to her.

I really appreciate the story of the "Last Hair Stand". It touches me a lot. It is really inspiring. She finds the meaning of her death before she can ever begin to accept the actuality of death. And before she died, she felt the happiness and fulfillment.

When I was reading the story "The Last Hair Strand", I was so touched of what the cancer patient did to the family because she know that even she can't stay as long as she want to because of her illness, she did something good for other people who needs help that makes her happy in the few days that she was staying in this world. And in that way, she know that she help the family alot, so in the time that she is dying she is happy because she know that the few days of her life become worthy. It is a very inspiring story.

Joyce Travelbee is somewhat mysterious. She is a woman that always keeps her problem and all the stress within herself. Well, that's unhealthy. But we can't blame her for being just like that because we don't know what kind of life she had. I'm just for her life, because before she died, she is in the peak of her success, she would have been received many awards, but unfortunately she passed away. Well, that's life. Maybe she's in heaven and I know she's happy because for all the people in the world, especially nurses and nursing students, her human to human relationship theory contributed much in nursing profession. I admire her for making that theory, because it makes me realize how important a good relationship of a nurse and patient is. Human to Human Relationship gives nurses ways on how the patients accept their illness. For her everything happens for a reason.

mm.. I love the story of mam danela, The Last Hair Strand. It really proves that everything happens for a reason. The girl with cancer died but she was able to help many people, especially Michael, Elena, and Michaela Elaine. I can't help but cry. It really touches my heart. That is really a great story.

Human to human relationship model

For me.. Her theory represent the interactions between the nurse and the patient..

human to human relationship model is established when the nurse and the patient attain a interventions that lessens the patient's suffering after having and progressed through the series of interaction.

My Own definition in the Interactional phases of Human to human relationship model

* Original Encounter- For me this is important because for others " First impression lasts".
*Emerging Identities- this is the time when you accept the uniqueness of individual.
*Empathy - empathy for me is when you and your patient become one , because a nurse must have the ability to share in the clients experience
*Sympathy- This is when the nurse help the patients to lessen the cause of patients individual.
*Rapport-a nurse should know how to lessen the patients suffering.

Joyce travelbee is one of the nursing theoriest that inspired me. Even if she died at a very young age of 47 she made a breakthrough in the nursing profession. Her theory Human-to Human Relationship Model tackles on how the nurse and the patient interact with one another.
"The Last Hair Strand", the novel written by mam Dani was really inspiring. While I was reading the novel, I was touched and I almost cried. It made me realize how lucky I am despite of all the imperfections.

The human to human relationship model
gave me the idea of how to give care for the patient and also the idea of how to handle the patient at the first encounter until he/she get well.It also taught me to give sympathy in patients. It will be helpful in my career as a nurse if I will become one.
"The Last Hair Strand"
The story is amazing and inspiring. The human to human relationship model was applied in the story when the nurse encountered the patient. The nurse is successful win letting the patient accept that she was sick. She totally accepted her situation in the last part of the story when she realized that she need to help others for her worth. The story deserves an award because it is so beautiful.

The "Human-to-Human Relationship Theory" of Joyce Travelbee is relly helpful for the improvement of nursing practice...

The "Interactional Phases" can help nurses to build a strong relationship with the patient. Although nurse and patient do not have any relations during their first encounter, they can make a way to know each other by applying the "Interactional Phases".. The nurse and patient can perceives each other's uniqueness, the nurse can be a listening friend and an adviser to the patient, and the patient can give his/her whole trust with the nurse...

The story, "The Last Hair Strands" inspires me a lot. I realized that every individual has a purpose in this world. We should not lose hope and feel that we are useless for having weaknessess. God really has purposes for giving us challenges in life... He wants us to realize that we have something to do to stay strong for all of His challenges...(=

Joyce Travelbee a psychiatric nurse which aims to help patient in order to avoid and alleviate the distress of unmet needs where the nurse and patient communicate with each other. Where she also define Illness which is being unhealthy; sufferings; hope; pain; hopelessness which only means that she is a loner person and maybe she also suffer this phenomenon in her life. I was shocked when I read Travelbee's life. Firstly when she died 47 years old that i didn't expect. Because all i know is all theorist died on the late ages like the recent theorist that ive studied. Secondly, when I found out that she has a cancer. Maybe because of her illness, she always focused on suffering and hopelessness on her theory. But behind of this, she still continue serving and doing things that nursing professions can used. Although she died at the early age, she had many good and useful things that she had done. For her, having an illness is not a reason to give up.

It gives me an idea that I can use in my everyday life when I encounter problems.

Joyce Travelbee's Human to human relationship model plays an important role to nursing profession. It helps the patient and the nurse to cooperate with each other in order to cope up with the disease. She is a mysterious woman who formulated a theory that she herself does not know how to perform it because she did not tell to anybody that she is about to die because she is suffering from cancer. I think her life was not that wonderful because she considers all human conditions and life experiences encountered by all men as suffering, illness, hope, and pain.

-where the nurse and the patient first encounter.
2.emerging identities
-where the nurse and the patient becomes comfortable with each other or the phase where the bond of relationship begins to form.
3.emphaty
-ability to share in person's experiences.
4.sympathy

The Last Hair Strand is a very inspiring story. I think this is not only for the cancer patient but also to the people think that they are the worst ever person. It seems for me like we need to accept the problem 1st then make a move after. If you want to help others make sure that you can help yourself, “you cannot give what you don’t have”. In the story after she open her eyes and mind, she notice that she was still lucky then she opens her heart to help the other person which fulfills herself. In relating Travelbee’s theory she emphasis “don’t loose hope” and I think because she is a religious person that believed to “Gods will “.

Joyce Travelbee’s human to human relationship model and the “last hair strands” written by our own clinical instructor was obviously interrelated to each in such a way that with the last hair strands the nurse sympathizes with the cancer patient as a person, maybe as a patient, but more wth the earlier. Travelbee’s theory is properly applied to this.

Travelbee before passing away in an early age, contributed enough with the profession. Enabled nurses to understand more with the meaning of suffering and illness. Also applied to cancer patients that also enabled nurses to have a deeper understanding with what a cancer patients is going through and help them conquer it.

And I am sure they applied her theory in his situation. Though I am not yet a nursing student then, I could say I sympathized and built rapport between us by spending my time during Christmas, new year as we jumped together believing we will gain height if we did so, playing chess, talking and sharing our experiences….I know through simple moments together I helped him forgot about his sickness. It is really hard to accept because he was only 17 years old then. But that is the fate of cancer patients...even me until now is asking why it happened…but as what Travelbee is trying to emphasized, acceptance and finding meaning of the sickness is the best solution…….

Joyce Travelbee's formulation of her theory has been evident in all situation of near-death or death experiences and the grieving stage of the relatives of the patient. Her experiences in Catholic charity institutions has led t o her conclusion that nursing care needs a humanistic revolution where nurses’ focus should return to its caring function towards the ill person.
She has pushed through this effort to change the attitudes and the stages of quality care of nurses for patients to avoid consumers to turn to another health service if the revolution would be ignored.

Good Afternoon Mrs. Oleresisimo,

Just What I expected!, Yes I've finally read some information about Joyce Travelbee, because Travelbee's Information about her life is very hard.Because She is my most favorite theorist of all the theorist in Nursing History eventhough she died at her adolescent age of her life, she gives a perception about pain from which she stated that is suffering and i also believe in that too.Because I'm an "EMO" and I'm related to anything about pain like what stated to her human to human relationship the most important to me as a inspiring nurse someday is the Empathy which she stated the ability to share in the person’s experience and I'm related to her experiences in life I mean the sufferings of her life. And also I learned many thing about her like the nurses must have a first impression to their patient to remember them for quite sometime, like the nurse and patient must perceive each others uniqueness to achieve to their goals, nurse must want to lessen the cause of patient’s suffering in order for the patient to recover his/her health, and we nurses must have nursing interventions to lessen our patient’s suffering, and for your very inspiring journal about the The Last Hair Strands my comment are:

I'm very touch by you Story about the cancer patient because for the first 6 months of her life she did not realize the value of life that god gave gave us but when the nurse told her that there are so many thing to do with her last 6 months of her of her life that she can even fullfill her life in just short time of living and she fullfill her dreams like what the nurse said!, It clearly stated that we nurses must have the the two major factors of empathy and sympathy when giving care to our patient and that's what happens to the cancer patient, because of the sympathy and empathy of the nurse, she fullfilled her dreams.

And I'm very thank you for this articla and the journal reading of the last hair strand it made me realize that every person is unique in thier own simple way!..

Joyce Travelbee, even in a short time of her life she had shared her knowledge to us. Her Human-to-Human relationship model talks more about pain, suffering, hope, hopelessness and other negative feeling of a person show what she was but also gives us the importance of pity which lead to help a person who needs it. She enumerated the different stage of her theory--original encounter, empathy, sympathy and rapport. These give an idea to the nurses how to relate or share feeling with the patients they're taking care of and of course giving nursing intervention.
In the last hairstrand, it tells how the girl realize the importance and use of her life just before she died...she was help by the nurse who applied the theory of Travelbee to alleviate the pain of feeling of the girl.
So, now I'll try to be a good adviser who can alleviate the suffering/pain of one's feeling...

Joyce Travelbee's Human-to-Human Relationship Model has helped many people especially those who cannot accept their illnesses. She doesn't emphasizes more on physical pain, it focuses more on pains and sufferings of a person. Although her theory lacks in clarity, simplicity, generality empirical precision and derivable consequences, it surely helps especially to those who are stressed and who are thinking that they are already wothless. This theory is more on self actualization, it's more on the realization of the patient that he/she could find meaning in his/her sickness. It is for the patient to know his/her value, worth and importance in his world.

The LAST HAIRSTRAND... a short novel written by our dear instructor... Mrs. Danela C. Oloresisimo, is really interesting. It is about the Human-to-Human Relationship Model. Based on the story, a cancer patient who is already dying found her value and worth on the few precious moments of her life. She found those despite of her serious condition. She has been the eye for the newly bind, Michael, the heart that continues to beat for Elena to continue living, and a caring and loving mother to Michaella Elleine. Althoughshe hasn't experience giving birth to a child...she already felt how to be a mother to a child. For the things she has done, she had felt satisfaction, peace of mind and a joy to her heart. She had helped many though she has a cancer...an extemely serious and worse illness. She also found meaning t5through her experience and that's what the Human-to-Human Relationship Model is...

Joyce Travelbee's human to Human relationship, plays a big role not only for nurse and patient but for everybody that looks forward to their relationship with such individual. This also explains how acceptance and recognition attached to nursing practice especially on nurse and patient. This theory helps us a lot in continuing our goal while in the situation that we cannot face.

I truly admire Travelbee for conceptualizing this theory, because of this, I've learn how to accept and recognize not only myself but the others too.

Joyce Travelbee is a strong and intelligent person. Her Human to Human Relationship Model gives nurses a hint on how to handle difficult situations and circumstances regarding the proper way of giving care to those patients who is chronically ill or terminally ill. Her views and perspectives about having difficult conditions with health served as a spiritual guidance and strong hold for the patients and especially to nurses which guides the patients towards wellness. She focuses on Cancer conditions that serves as an evidence to some humors that she might had been suffering of that illness which is the cause of her early death. Joyce Travelbee served as an inspiration for the sick. Not just because of her theory and perspectives, but because she gave an important belief that these sick people should live as long as they could want to in the hearts of their loved ones.

Joyce Travelbee may be an intelligent woman like the rest of the theorists but her life seems to be a lot more different for she is quite depriving others to know her better. Although her theory doesn't pass much of the analysis, Human-to-Human Relationship Model still remains useful for everybody since everyone has tendency to experience illness, pain, and suffering which is the focus of this model as well as making a good communication.

Story of "The Last Hair Strands" portrays almost all the adversities in life, pain, illness, suffering, hopelessness or even death. But what is vital in this story is realizing the worth of time, the value of every day and the blessing of life. It is not how long you will go, how many awards you received, it is how well you perform your duty, your task, your purpose. For the nurse, she was able to bear with the client using Human-to-Human Relationship Model. It is writen beyond every words. As for the cancer patient herself, she succeeded a good fight even not for struggling to have longer life, but for a quality life through dealing with her hostile situation and making her life and herself meaningful and worthy.

Because of the human to human relationship theory of Joyce Travelbee, i learn a lot because of this theory. It is significant in the nursing practice because it proposed the relationship between the nurse and the patient, which built good relationship to the nurse and the patient.Because of that relationship the patient become more cooperative, which help them to recover easily from their illness. Also this theory help the nurses to give sympathy and empathy
to their patient which every nurse must have.

Because of the story wrote by ma'am Oloresisimo, I understand the theory of Joyce Travelbee that it is the nurse duty to make the patient's life to become meaningful
before they died.

Joyce Travelbee died at 47 in a very young age, but she even contributed and influenced our nursing knowledge as well as in nursing practice... as you noticed, it is a unique for her that most of her definitions is all about pain, suffering, and hopelessness.

Indeed, her theory was truly significant especially in a patient cancer, that they not just only to accept their sickness and condition, but also to understand the meaning and valuable of life...

In connection with her theory, the novel “The Last Hair Strand" by Maam Danela Oloresisimo was introduced to us . And as I read this, it truly touches my heart and soul. It was really inspiring and heart-warming. That even though at the very young age, you have experience cancer problem, and you have only limited time in this world, you have to be thankful and you must spend your remaining time worthwhile and satisfied.

For I believe that God has a purpose and plan for everything. Just leave your life to Him, and life would be completely...

Thank you Maam for sharing us your novel to us. It really captures our heart...

A nurse must prove her worth as a professional in doing jobs in caring and loving sick persons. A nurse must also focus on the emotional, social and spiritual wellness of a patient. I can relate the story 'the last hair strands' with Joyce Travelbee's statement that "nursing is an interoersonal process whereby the professional nurse practitioner assists an individual, family and community to prevent or cope with experience or illness and suffering, and if necessary to find meaning in these experiences." As the cancer patient in the story helps a family, she's like a nurse who assists one individual or family in coping with experience or illness and suffering. A nurse finds meaning in the experiences just like what the cancer patient did when she found her worth and value in this world. The interactional phases of human-to-human relationship model has also a similarity with the interaction of the cancer patient and the family.

Human-to-Human Relationship Model

The Life of Joyce Travelbee…

Her life is like a butterfly, we all know that butterfly is a majestic insect that attract humans as they fly around us, but even though they catch the attention of many humans, it ends in a short period of time because they have a very short life spans.

Rumors says that Travelbee died because of cancer, maybe they’re right about that because some of her definition focuses on the things that you feel when you have cancer, PAIN, SUFFERING, ILLNESS, AND HOPELESSNESS, but the most important word in her definition is HOPE which I think she really need in the time when she is very ill.

THE LAST HAIR STRANDS

The Big ‘’C” that kills millions of people worldwide, Cancer. Some of the Korean drama that I always watch includes people suffering from cancer. Some died in having a tumor in their brain, some is from bone cancer, and sometimes they died from leukemia or cancer of the blood and some from lung cancer. But it doesn’t matter what type of cancer they died from, it’s the things that they want to do before dying that makes me cry. Having a cancer is like knowing your own expiration date. It sounds funny but its so sad waiting for the time you’ll die.

This Novel truly touches me. I wish everybody can read it. And I wish someday it will be shown in the theaters. The only thing that I can say is, WHY DO GOOD DIE YOUNG?

Joyce Travelbee's "Human-to-Human Relationship Model," states that the nurse and the patient interrelate with each other, and the purpose of nursing is to assist an individual, family, to cope with their experience of illness and suffering.

Travelbee's theory is very useful in the field of nursing profession because it has the ability to descrribe, explain, predict and control such phenomena. Her theory can be used as guidelines for nurses who help individuals understand the meaning of illness and suffering.

Mrs. Danela Oloresisimo's "The Last Hair Strand," is such a wonderful story. It is full of inspirational thoughts and it really touches my heart. In this story I have learned that everything happens for a reason, that all of the things happened to us was God's plan. This story can be applied to Travelbee's Human-to-Human Relationship Model, wherein the nurse gave her inspiring words to the Lady with no hair in order for her to have a better outlook with her life. Nurse gave her the reason to live her life to the fullest that eventough she has a cancer, still, her life is worthy.

The Human to Human Relationship model heps the patient to accept the condition that he or she was in. There are 5 interactional phases to apply this model..First, ORIGINAL ENCOUNTER,which is the first meeting of the nurse and the patient, next is the EMERGING IDENTITIES, where the nurse and the patient starts to communicate with each other, then the EMPATHY, where the nurse and the patient shres the experienced that they have, then the SYMPATHY, where it goeswithempathy, and last the Rapport, where the nurse wants to lessen the person's suffering.

Joyce Travelbee's great help for me as a studentis having great hope and learning to love life, give importance to it and how to have a valuable life.
Though her theory lacked with simplicity and clarity because of the terms she used, she still have the meaningful theory for me. For me, her theory was different to the other theory's I have encountered because aside from teaching the prevention of such illness, she also thought the meaning of life.
She also thought how to come up into a successful rapport which is essential in the nurse-patient interaction. I also learned from her that the therapeutic use of self is very important in nursing.
In application of Travelbee's theory, the story of" The Last Hair Strand" shows the best of this theory. The part that I liked the most this story is the evolution of a hopeless patient into a very fulfilled and hopeful one because she gave value for the last day of her life. This story also have a great help for the nursing students since it introduced medical terms such as carcinogen and other terms and meaning of cancer.
