Definition of Nursing and the "14 Components of Nursing Care"

Virginia Avenel Henderson

(1897-1996)

“First Lady of Nursing”

“First Truly International Nurse”

“The nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind, a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the mother, the mouthpiece for those too weak or withdrawn to speak and so on.”

Life Story

Born in Kansas City, Missouri on Nov. 30, 1897, the 5th of eight children of Daniel B. and Lucy Minor (Abbot) Henderson. Her father was an attorney for Native American Indians. Her mother came from the state of Virginia to which Miss Henderson returned for her early schooling.

World War I developed her interest in nursing in 1918.

She was educated at the U.S. Army School of Nursing (1921) then worked as a staff nurse of the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City.

1922, began teaching in Norfolk Protestant Hospital, Virginia.

1929, teaching supervisor in the clinics of Strong Memorial Hospital, Ronchester, New York.

Teachers College, Columbia University where she completed her B.S. (1932) and M.A. in education (1934), then taught from 1934 until 1948.

As a researcher, writer and author:

  1. Bertha Harmer’s Textbook of the Principles and Practice of Nursing, 4th edition, 1939.
  2. Bertha Harmer’s Textbook of the Principles and Practice of Nursing, 5th edition, 1955, contains her definition of nursing.
  3. Basic Principles of Nursing Care, 1960.
  4. The Nature of Nursing, 1966.
  5. The Principles and Practice of Nursing, 6th edition, 1978.

In 1953, she joined Yale School of Nursing.

Fellowship in the Royal College of Nursing in England

1983, Sigma Theta Tau International’s Mary Tolle Wright Founders Award for Leadership, one of the honor society’s highest honors.

1988, ANA citation

She recognized early on the importance of an outcomes orientation, health promotion, continuity of care, patient advocacy, multidisciplinary scholarship, integration of the arts and sciences, and boundary spanning.

Her elegant definition of nursing, with its emphasis on complementing the patient's capabilities, provides a clear direction for what nursing should be.

With her silky drawl, bright blue eyes, wispy curls, and beautiful clothes, Miss Henderson was the embodiment of an impish Southern gentlewoman. She was the most gracious hostess I have ever encountered, and had a wicked sense of humor.

She was the incarnation of those Greek verities--the good, the true, and the beautiful. She was shaped by the aesthetic that produced beautiful surroundings in honey and rose colored tones (she gave up the idea of becoming an interior designer/architect when there was a need for nurses in World War I), as well as elegant arguments embellished by references to a literature much broader than just the nursing literature.

Even when her memory and hearing started to fail, she was not limited, because her curiosity and interest in people elicited from them an engagement in the issues that then set in motion her own creative juices.

Virginia Henderson was arguably the most famous nurse of the 20th century. Because that was the case, Sigma Theta Tau's International Nursing Library bears her name. She was only willing to permit use of her name if the electronic networking system to be developed would advance the work of staff nurses by getting to them current and jargon-free information wherever they were based.

Died on March 19, 1996 at the age of 98, after partaking chocolate cake and ice cream and saying goodbyes to her family and friends. A family-sponsored memorial service was held at Battel Chapel on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, CT on May 6 the first day of National Nurses week in 1996. Miss Henderson's family, including her grandniece, Catherine Burdge, who is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Virginia Henderson Fund, Yale School of Nursing.

An accomplished author, avid researcher and a visionary.

Virginia Henderson has been called the "First Lady of Nursing" and the "First Truly International Nurse". She is an achiever personality. The honors bestowed on Henderson are numerous. She introduced the concept of mind and body of a person as inseparable or cannot be separated. She also gave emphasis in prioritizing health promotion as more important than care of the sick.In caring for the sick,it is the responsibility of the nurse to help the patient manage his surroundings to protect him from harm or any mechanical injury. We must be educated about safety and must be aware of different social customs and religious practices to assess dangers. The nurse must be knowledgeable in both biological and social sciences and must have the ability to assess basic human needs.

The patient is considered as healthy when he/she meets the 14 basic needs. The nurse must be a substitute for what the patient lacks;nurse must be a helper with the patient when the patient cannot meet his basic needs;nurse must be a partner with the patient to formulate the care plan together.

I am also inspired to VIRGINIA HENDERSON because she is the FIRST LADY OF NURSING and the FIRST TRULY INTERNATIONAL NURSE.She is the theorist who wants agood ambiance, she also aadvocatefor the introduction ofpsychiatricnursing in the curriculum and serve on a committee such a course at eastern state hospitalin williamsburg,in Virginia..
On her theory 14 BASIC HUMAN NEEDS she says that the nurse is temporarily of unconcious.for my own understandig we need to be clean like her she also want a good ambiance. Also in the hospital we need to have the 14 FUNDAMENTAL NEEDS OF HUMAN.

Definition of Nursing and the 14 Components of Nursing Care by Virginia Henderson showed her ideas on how a person could be healthy.

For her, if you had the 14 Basic Human Needs, you are healthy but if not, it only means that you are not healthy. It is simple and understandable.

Based on the article, she recognized early on the importance of an outcomes orientation, health promotion, continuity of care, patient advocacy, multidisciplinary scholarship, integration of the arts and sciences, and boundary spanning which promotes wellness.

In her definition of a nurse/nursing, nurses are the one to assist the patient's needs in order to help the sick recover from his/her sickness.

Like Nightingale's Environmental Theory, the 14 Basic Components of Human Needs also deals with the proper waste disposal, sanitation and proper ventilation.

This theory was such a help for nurses, patients and for all.

henderson's commitment in the field of nursing care provided the birth and usage of the 14 basic components of nursing care which is of great importance to the nursing interventions.

the zealous first lady of nursing, the fulle efforts that she had exerted serves as an effective medium of renedering care to the patients; the nurses are given the guidelines on which they could conform to establish and exercise the sense of professionlism..

her contribution has given way to te reverence and independece of the actions of nurses as she clearly specified the efficient ways of interacting with the patients, the physician and the other members of the healthcare team..

with her theory, the nurses do not only teach the patients on how to become independent individuals; more importantly, she has engrave the same word to the nursing profession:

...independence...

independence in a way that the nurses are able to function independently, even without too much instructions from the physicians...

henederson offered the sense of interaction, independendence and empirical knowledge that render the concepts of being efficient nurses to assist those people in need...

I think the importance of her definition and 14 fundamentals of nursing care is that we can apply these 14 fundamentals of nursing care as our basis in finding the condition of a person.

It seems it predicts a person if he/she is a healthy person or not.
Without those basis we cannot easily know those what we must apply in our patient as our remedy.
But I strictly conclude that before we apply of this 14 Basic human Needs...we must first apply it in ourself not only for those times that we are in our duties but also we must maintain it in our nature

In the other side...Peplau also explored the world and influenced her Psychodynamic Nursing in Blooming nurses in that time so I got surprised that henderson got the title as the First Truly International Nurse. But I am satisfied of her title because she is deserving for that case.

Virginia Avenel Henderson, as I can see, is a very observant person with a very poetic personality. Why? because personally her theory is candidly unique and her quotation about nursing is quite inspiring . Also, I never thought that these needs can be classified as a theory when compiled together.

Though Henderson's theory failed to passed the criteria for clarity by the scientific community for the reason that it is very broad. It sure is clear to me. Why? Because I have fully understood her concept and its simple to understand.

I hope I'll be able to meet these needs as often as I like. Her theory made me realize that the subject or the focus of creating a theory is easy but its just too simple for us to notice. Agree?

Thanks to Virginia I have been introduced to things that I have long forgotten.

Virginia Henderson is the theorist of 14 basic human needs. She described the roles of the person and the nurse as to be an independent. In her statement she defined of nursing as, "The unique function of the nurs is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge. And to do this in such a way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible" (Henderson, 1966, p. 15).
In her theory she explained that a nurse should help the patient to be an independent.

Virginia Henderson her idea about 14 Fundamentalls needs of Human were very useful in Nursing practice. It can be used in Assesing and Evaluating the patient's needs. With this 14 needs we will know which are lacking to the patient. As a student nurse we can help them to meet thier needs to maintain or achieve health. We can also assist the patient at times of thier sickness and dependence to encourage and support to meet their goals and later become independence. Her contribution to amprove studies in nursing field with the use of library for research purposes. She also teach nursing profession in different country. She deserve to receive those pretigious awards.

Definition of Nursing and the 14 Components of Nursing Care is very important to distinguished whether a person is healthy or not.It is because these theory states the needs of a person. When a person lacks one of these Basic Human Needs,he or she will be classified as a unhealthy person.

For us nurses it is very significant to us in a way that it help us to identify what kind of intervention we will give to our patient. It will help us to classify what kind of illness does a patient have.

Virginia Avenel Henderson had contributed the genuine definition of nursing by providing the 14 Basic Components of Nursing Care which made her the quintessential nurse of the twentieth century.

With the enormity of her educational background she had had propagated a concrete components of basic nursing care which served as a behoof for patients.

She tasked nurses as direct caregiver in which their primary concern is to succor the patients in gaining independence. If any of the enlisted components isn't met by a patient, hence, a nurse is liable to make the patient meet these needs for rapid recovery.

In my own perspective, she engendered as the new Nightingale of her time due to various accolades bestowed to her.

Virginia Avenel Henderson and her 14 Components of Nursing Care. She is known to be the first lady of nursing and then first truly international nursing. Her contribution in the nursing profession helps a lot. As far as I understand, when people meet the 14 basic needs they are healthy, fit, and in good physical shape but if not, they are no rather than nothing, unhealthy one. She defined nurse as the one who is responsible for assisting the patients for them to meet their needs and to cope for their sickness or to recover from their condition. In addition, in her theory she says that the role of the nurse is not only to help the patients to feel better and to be independent in the same way. However, at the same time, the nurses must also know that they should function in their own, independently. Henderson did her job, she has conceptualized her theory even though it did not pass to clarity, but then it is easy to understand and identify.
Like Nightingale and Peplau, she also deserves those impressive awards because of her contributions to the nursing field. She never hesitates to share what she knew and she did not show to everybody a bit of selfishness. Henderson died in different way, after chocolate and ice cream party, without knowing the reason, maybe because she wants to take a rest after long time.
Her 14 components of nursing care help a lot nowadays in nursing profession.

gud pm i learned that virginia henderson is the first lady of nursing and first truly international nurse. all of her 14 basic needs can really use by the nurse to serve all of them to the patient just to be cured and healthy. but first the nurse must study, understand and learn more about the culture of the patient before she gives the 14 human basic needs to patient. no wonder she has many awards and honors. her plan of redesigning of the hospital back in world war 1 can definitely help the patient more comfortable and will get well soon because the hospitals back then are really dirty.

With her 14 Basic Human Needs, we can easily know that the person is ill or having something wrong with his/her well-being.

She is truly a great person because she showed me that to be a nurse you must be persistent in your works and theories that you are doing to achieve success and to maintain the top peak of victory. Henderson also gave me ideas how to formulate a problem that almost every person has and with it, our group formulated and organized a project for our Mid Term.

Virginia Avenel Henderson also known as the “First Lady of Nursing” and the “First Truly International Nurse” was an intellectual person that she made a theory that deals in helping the nurses or even an ordinary being to identify the complaint of a sick person and to know where to focus in one's aspect. And this theory, the "Definition of Nursing" and the "14 Components of Nursing Care" made an immense impact in the nursing world.

In her theory she mentioned all the aspect of a human's basic needs indorder to promote a healthy and vigorous living, such as; breathing normally, eating and drinking adequately, eliminating body wastes, moving and maintaining a desirable posture, sleeping and resting, selecting suitable clothes, etc.

With the presence of this concepts, we can identify a person's problem immediately.

Virginia Henderson became very popular and a living nursing theorist in her time. Even now, her memory and contribution to the nursing knowledge never fade.
I can compare Henderson's 14 Basic Human Needs to the Hierarchy of Needs of Abraham Maslow. To live a better life, to achieve/attain contentment, a person should have this 14 Basic Human Needs accdg. to Henderson.
In nurse-patient relationship of Henderson, the nurse could help the patient attain his basic human needs, by becoming a substitute for the patient, letting the patient's feeling/wants express, nurse should become the patient's helper and partner because the patient has that unhealthy condition that's why the nurse became responsible for the patient's attainment of his basic needs and the nurse take care of his patients with sincerity and dedication because that's what the real essence of nursing care.

..Virginia Henderson-Definition of Nursing and 14 Components of Nursing Care.. I am very thankful because of her theory she shows the 14 basic human needs that nurses should now, because if a nurse know this basic human needs it can help her to know the needs of the patients,, and it is easily for a nurse to attend the needs of the patients..

..In her theory she defined nursing as a person who helped sick person for his fast recovery..
..and being a nurse we should all know the factors for the fast recovery of our patient..

..in her theory we can also know that we can say that a person is healthy when he meets the 14 basic needs..

..by means of her theory she also show the roles of the nurse as a substitute for the patient, as a helper for the patient and as a partner with the patient, and the nurses should know their relationship for their patient to help their patient to show their feelings and also a nurse to attend the basic needs of her patients.

She categorized nursing activities into 14 components, based on human needs. She described the nurse's role as substitutive (doing for the person), supplementary (helping the person), or complementary (working with the person), with the goal of helping the person become as independent as possible.

Her statement "The nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind,a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the mother, the mouthpiece for those too weak or withdrawn to speak and so on."
shows that a nurse really helps the patient in his or her immediate recovery.

She said that a person if healthy if she or he has the 14 basic human needs.

one of her greatest contributions in this field is the introduction of the 14 fundamental needs of human.it taught us that a human should possess all of it components or else you are considered as ill.now we are more informed about the things that we should know about caring a patient.

we are now also involved in the four basic steps such as assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation phase.

as a nurse we should function different roles to our patient like a substitute for the patient, as a helper for the patient and as a partner with the patient.

Virginia Avenel Henderson life was a unique one. Known to be the First Lady of Nursing and also the First Truly International Nurse. Also formulated the 14 Components of Basic Nursing Care. When I first read her article I got curious why she called the First Lady in Nursing and First Truly the International Nurse. Maybe I am wondering why because Nightingale and Peplau was the first one before her. Her life is also inspiring like the other two theorists. Her being unique, to the other theorist get my interest with her about her life and theory. As our teacher discuss her and gave me more knowledge in different theorist it became clear to me how she spend her life through caring the health of others. She inspires me a lot especially when her memory and hearing started to fail but still she continue her goals and plans in the health and wellness of the people. She was also the first one who introduced a different style in nursing research with the used of a library by creating a blog site that tackles about the nursing care and profession. Her work was great and she was famous because Sigma Theta Tau's International Nursing Library bears her name. Her death was a unique one also because She was a brave woman to be able to look strong and not tell to everyone that she has a great illness. She also uses her talent and skills on how the people became interested with her because she was a gracious hostess and have an intelligent sense of humor. Her death was in different way because she did not want the people to worry about her and her health condition. Her 14 Components of Basic Nursing Care is very applicable for all of the people in order to have a highest level of health condition. It is easily understood and simple to apply and do that in our everyday life. Her theory is very helpful nowadays especially in the nursing and other medical professions.

It really interests me a lot about the learning of the different nursing theorist and their contributions. It also helps us to gain more knowledge on how we can be a good and useful nurse to others.

"14 Basic Human Needs"
This theory emphasized the 14 basic needs of humans. This includes the physical, emotional, social and psychological needs. Fpr the patient to achieve health,
he must be able to meet his need for support system which in many cases provided by the family. She also emphasized that these needs are vital to the patients. In the role of the nurse as a health care provider, the nurse must be knowledgable in both biological and social sciences and must have the ability to assess basic human needs. In order for the patient to recover from his illness, his needs must be provided.

Virginia Henderson's theory, 14 Basic Human Needs, is important. The following human needs are considered as a factor or things that must be fulfilled.

14 Basic Human Needs:
*breathing normally
*eating and drinking adequately
*eliminating body wastes
*moving and maintaining a desirable position
*sleeping and resting
*selecting suitable clothes
*maintaining normal body temperature by adjusting clothing and modifying the environment
*keeping the body clean and well groomed to promote integument (skin)
*avoiding dangers in the environment
*communicating with others
*worshipping according to one's faith
*working in such a way that one feels a sense of accomplishment
*participating in various forms of recreation
discovering curiosity that leads to normal development

According to Henderson, an individual becomes unhealthy if one of 14 basic human needs is not met. And I believed from her sayings because through reading and analyzing her theory of fourteen basic human needs, it is clear enough and very understandable that if you did not met each needs, you cauld be an unhealthy individual. And so, for me, her theory adds additional knowledge for us to become more healthy. I salute Henderson because she used her wealth in helping others. She's a generous woman. She did not discriminate people who's not in her level of life. She's a fantastic woman.

After our discussion about her theory, 14 Basic components of Nursing, I conclude that the 14 fundamental needs should be observed properly and should be given to the person to keep his/her good condition and if not, illness might occur. I also conclude that a nurse asses the patient for the 14 basic fundamental needs and identify what element is lacking(assesment Phase). the nurse also plan to meet the needs fit to the doctors prescribed plan ( planning phase).
Then she will use the 14 basic needs in answering the factors contributes to the illness, she will depend her actions according to her observations (Implementation phase). Then evaluate if the goals are met or not.
Her theory was applicable not only in nursing but also on our daily life scenario.

Virginia Henderson defined nursing as "assisting individuals to gain independence in relation to the performance of activities contributing to health or its recovery." She focuses her nursing care on the supplementary needs of patient as required of being wellness physically, mentally feed.

Her theory is very consistent although she did not consider her work as theory. She defined nursing as many times with different concept and focus on it. Her theory also passes through the different phase which is assesment, planning, implementation and evaluation, which serves asa a guide in the fundamentals of 14 basic needs of a patient.

And she beleives that the mind and body are inseparable. If mind is in manifestation or in bad condiition, the body is also affected dueto the malfunction of the mind. And therefore, the relation between the body and mind is directly proportional to each other.

"The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge. And to do this in such a way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible." It is also one of her famous definition, which she include the general essence of the nurses. Virginia Henderson's theory which is the 14 Basic Human Needs greatly helped the nursing profession especially in the nursing practice. Because it focuses on decision-making and is deliberate in such a way that in every step of the Nursing Process, it plays very important roles. Miss Henderson formulated some steps in solving problems regarding the nursing care, such as the Assessment Phase, Planning Phase, Implementation Phase and the Evaluation Phase. With these phases in nursing by Henderson, nurses will have a clear view in caring their patients.

This theory explains whether a patient is healthy or not by using the 14 Basic Human Needs... Because of this, the nurse will know which factor his patient lacks. Then he is able to make a solution for that particular problem regarding his patient.

This theory improves the nursing profession to have a better implementation of caring for their patients because nurses will know the basic needs of their patients. They will be able to solve and sustain the needs of their patients and it will result in a fast recovery.

As a nursing student, this theory helps me to understand the common needs of my 'soon to be' patients and in the future I will have the capacity and enough knowledge to resolve them...

The Definition of Nursing and the 14 Basic Human needs of Virginia Henderson plays very important role in the field of nursing until these days. She states that the health or the wellness of one person is dependent to these needs and the person must meet the 14 Basic Human Needs. Her theory also consists of four phases the ASSESSMENT PHASE, the nurse must assess the 14 needs of the patient and check which one is lacking or fully met. The PLANNING PHASE involves giving the plan to meet the needs of the patient. Then the IMPLEMENTATION PHASE, the nurses uses the 14 basic needs in answering the factors that are contributing to the illness state of the patient. Lastly the EVALUATION PHASE, the nurse and the patient review the relationship and decides whether the goald are met or not. Henderon focuses on decision-making. And she states that every step in Nursing Process plays very important role. Her theory is complex rather than simplistic. And the definition provided by Henderson are broad in scope.

We can act as a substitute for the patients who cannot do what they want, for example, the patient can't call the doctor when something's happenning,us nurses will do the call.Nurses act as a helper for the patient, if the patinet cannot eat by himself..there is the nurse who can help me move their body parts. And as a member of the healthcare team,us nurses should work independently and we must not occupy the things that will others do.
I can say that her theory was great and it is useful not only in caring for our patients but in our daily living..

Her idea of making the a good aura of hospitals was good! Also I admired her for having that idea to wear that dress and making their venue, beutiful, which makes the nurse eager to go there is such a great idea.

The theory of Henderson is helpful too..Now one can say that he/she is healthy if the person meets and achieve the 14 Basic Needs..

But because Henderson and her theory were introduced to me, ngayon, alam ko na, na I am using her theory since then pa pala.

Her theory was simple yet very applicable. I don’t understand why it didn’t pass clarity but her theory was clear for me, I understand it well. She also played an emphasis on the function of the nurse in relation with the patient, physician and the health team.

Her definition of nursing was the widely accepted one. So we should thank her for that. And another, I like her quotation for nursing. The roles of the nurse were emphasized there so much.

Virginia's definition of nursing clearly states the purpose of nursing that nurses must act. A nurse can be a substitute for the patient when he is lacking a need. Through her, the patient will still be able to do what he can't do. But the nurse must know her limitations-- that she must be a substitute only for a while and help the patient assess a need independently. As a nurse, she also serves in a team where she will do only her duties assigned to her and the jobs that a nurse should do. Virginia's statement that a nurse works independently of a physician serves as a fact for nurses to be ab observable one. She must keenly observe what is the pathological causes of the patient's lack of need which requires a nurse to have a education.
What I have stated lately was some of her contribution to practice and education. In terms of research, she advocated the use of library research which is true to be essential for nurses to gain better knowledge.
For me, her definition is simple and clear although the critics did not pass it on clarity.

Virginia's theory implicates that the nurse must be of service to the patient whatever the patient may require to achieve a healthy status. Who is Virginia Henderson?..She is the First Lady of Nursing because she is a lady that doesn't go out without having a make-up. Base on her concepts and theory, she is definitely concern with the patient for the reason that if the patient cannot do a certain work or job, the nurse will be the substitute and the helper, in other words the nurses are the one that helps the patient fulfill their tasks and make them an independent person.Another reason is that the nurses are the one that serves as the resource person for the patient in case of planning a care. The other focus of Virginia Henderson's theory is the nurse because the nurse as a member of the healthcare team works and contributes responsibilities for their team, but it doesn't mean that all the works for the team is in charge with nurse rather their are assigned tasks that each member must do and accomplish.

"The nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind,a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the mother, the mouthpiece for those too weak or withdrawn to speak and so on."
Her assumptions teaches us that the nurses should be the guide of the patients to attain good health and life. But not only them, all the people can do it, for example by taking care of the sick person at home every person can do it, by simply giving medicine, foods and care.

The 14 basic needs of Virginia Henderson serves us my guide and reminders in my day to day living to help myself and other people.

The nurses’ roles revolve around helping the client meet these needs, and assist them in the performance of the required activities. "A woman with a silky drawl, bright blue eyes, wispy curls and beautiful clothes, an embodiment of a southern gentlewoman. Incarnation of Greek varieties -- the good, the true and the beautiful". These are the words that best describe Virginia Avenel Henderson who is such an elegant woman that has a passion for nursing. A woman that has a heart to help the individual recover from such illness by formulating the "14 Components of Nursing Care".

“The nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind, a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the mother, the mouthpiece for those too weak or withdrawn to speak and so on.”These are the words of Virginia Henderson, which exhibits the true definition of nursing.

Henderson formulated the 14 Fundamental Needs of humans which are:
1. Breathe normally

2. Eat and drink adequately

3. Eliminate body wastes

4. Move and maintain desirable postures

5. Sleep and rest

6. Select suitable clothes—dress and undress

7. Maintain body temperature within normal range by adjusting clothing and modifying the environment

8. Keep the body clean and well groomed and protect the integument

9. Avoid dangers in the environment and avoid injuring others

10. Communicate with others in expressing emotions, needs, fears, or opinions

11. Worship according to one’s faith

12. Work in such a way that there is a sense of accomplishment

13. Play or participate in various forms of recreation

14. Learn, discover, or satisfy the curiosity that leads to normal development and health and use the available health facilities.

According to her, when the 14 fundamentals are not met, the patient is not healthy. Accompanied by the nurse, it is the nurses' role to help the patient recover from illness. Here she also stated the functions of a nurse. These are: the nurse-patient relationship that has three levels, as a substitute, as a helper and as a partner; the nurse-physician and; the nurse as a member of the healthcare team.

Henderson's theory was a great help in our nursing field.

Virginia Henderson and her 14 Basic Needs is very useful on the health condition of people. One is not considered healthy if he/she has not attained the 14 complete components of nursing care. Her theory is very applicable in the society especially to the nurses because it is the obligation of the nurse to guarantee satisfaction in seeking 100% wellness. A nurse could be a substitute for the patient,a helper to the patient and a partner with the patient. The emotional needs are also guided by the nurses. Care must always include people from all walks of life, from the well and sick, and from the newborn to the dying.

Good Morning Mrs. Oloeresisimo.

Definition of Nursing and the 14 Components of Nursing Care which was conceptualized by Virginia Henderson tells whether a person is healthy or not. She said that if you possesses these 14 Components of Nursing Care you are considered healthy, but if you miss one, two, or more components taht means you're unhealthy.

Regarding her definition of nursing, she concluded that nurses are the one who is responsible to alleviate the sufferings if a sick person.

Based on her statements, I was so impressed to her. She greatly influenced the nursing field.

Good Morning Mam Oloresisimo,

Hildegard Peplau also explored the world and influenced her Psychodynamic Nursing in Blooming nurses in that time so I got surprised that henderson got the title as the First Truly International Nurse. But I am satisfied of her title because she is deserving for that case.

This theory improves the nursing profession to have a better implementation of caring for their patients because nurses will know the basic needs of their patients. They will be able to solve and sustain the needs of their patients and it will result in a fast recovery.
As a nursing student, this theory helps me to understand the common needs of my 'soon to be' patients and in the future I will have the capacity and enough knowledge to resolve them.

Thank you Mam .,

I’m so glad that she already visited our country. I admired her because she also received a lot of honorary awards. Because of her 14 Basic Human Needs, the nurse intervention can function easier and more organized. It serves as a guide in every phase that will be encountered. She also postulated the nurse functions in relation with the patient, physician and other member of the health team which also helps a lot for achieving the proper relationship that should be done. Also her support in developing nurses as a baccalaureate level and being an advocate in the use of library for research purpose is a great influence in research and education. Henderson Definition of Nursing and the 14 Components of Nursing Care focuses on the patient and the nurse. In her theory we clearly understand of how the nurse functions in relation with the following:
1.The Nurse-Patient Relationship
-the nurse as a substitute for the patient.
-the nurse as a helper to the patient.
-the nurse as a partner with the patient.
2.The Nurse-Physician Relationship
3.The Nurse as a Member of the Health Care Team

Aside on that, her theory states the 14 basic needs of human. For her if a person or human being doesn't complete the 14 basic needs, the person is not healthy because for her a healthy person is complete in 14 basic needs. And her 14 Basic Needs is similar to the Hierarchy of needs,(food, cloth, and shelter).Through on her 14 Basic Needs it helps a person to become healthy and avoid diseases and illnesses from our environment.

This theory of Henderson introduces the 14 basic needs of human. It is considered broad in scope because it could be applied in every setting such in a way that it covers all areas of nursing practice. This states that the 14 basic needs must be achieved completely by an individual in order to achieve also the quality of life. This is very basic for a person to function fully. This theory also teaches, especially student nurses to establish a good relationship to his patient and to the health care team specifically to the physician.:) According to Henderson, a nurse functions independently from the physician but must promote the plan of care developed by the health care team.:)

Virginias Henderson's "14 Components of Nursing Care" makes use of the patient on how he/she care of her body. In this theory I learned on how to take care of my and to others. The importance of this theory is that we learn on how to do the basic care for the patient.

the discussion of the 14 human basic needs are so detailed, that it shows Virginia Henderson's ideas of a unique nursing care.

through the assumption of such ideas a nurse or a nursing student, such as myself would find
the healthcare of an individual much more easier to achieve than those healthcare done without theoretical basis.

...Virginia Avenel Herderson regarded as the "First Lady of Nursing" and "First Truly International Nurse"has a wide contributions in the field of Nursing.
An elegant, famous Nursing theorist who contributed the 14 basic human needs.which until now we are using, she also emphasized the need to view the patient and his family as a single unit, for the patient to achieve health, he must be able to meet his need to support system which in many cases provided by the familly.

..she also asserted that nurse must function independently from the physician.
"If Nightingale was to the ninetieth,Herderson was to the twentieth".
I admired her because of her works and honors, she held honorary degrees from 13 universities..
WOW!!! Imagine !3 universities, I hope be like her someday... :)

Virginia Henderson's Definition of Nursing helps in the promotion of the treatment of the ill person.Even though you are a member of the healthcare team,as a nurse,we must know how to act independently but make sure that you are still working in the plan prescribed by the leader or the physician.

in order for the patient to recover faster,14 basic human needs must be met and this is achieved with the help of the nurse, that's why there are three levels compromising the nurse-patient relationsip:the nurse as a substitute for the patient,as a helper to the patient and as partner to the patient.

applying this components of nursing care in our daily living will help us to be healthy.=)

It guides the nurse and the nursing students as well..to cope the adjustments to your patient, helps us realize that during the time that a patient is sick he needs a nurse and the nurse will help the patient to get well by providing and helping the patient obtain the 14 basic human needs which serve as the basis of the wellness of the patient. The nurse can play different roles as long as it can hepl the patient to recover.

At first, Virginia Henderson's "14 Components of Basic Nursing care" cannot be considered as a theory. It lacks some criteria of being a theory. this is the reason why Peplau's theory was known first than her theory though Henderson was older. But because of her perseverance, it also became a theory. In this theory, it tackles the 14 basic needs of human. She got her idea from Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. As a nurse, we should provide these needs for our patients to attain health and independence. She believed that promotion of health is more important than curing the sick. this theory also opened doors for the development of new theorist. This theory was widely used in the nursing practice for the nursing process such as Assessment phase, planning phase, implementation phase & evaluation phase. Her theory is such a great help in the nursing profession.

Her theory "14 Basic Nursing Care" had a great contribution to nursing profession and we can apply it in all settings. In her theory it discusses the 14 basic human needs. As a nurse, we have to know what the patient is lacking and we should know how to provide their needs. And she believed that promotion of health is the most important.

hmm.. Virginia Henderson had no intention to formulate a theory, but i'm thankful that her works was marked as a theory. She defined nursing as “The nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind, a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the mother, the mouthpiece for those too weak or withdrawn to speak and so on.”
(a great definition)

Her 14 Components of Basic Nursing Care contributed a lot in nursing profession. It really helps us how to care for a patient. She also give the nurse's function for us to know our specific role. Her theory tells us how important the 14 Basic Needs for us to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
She believed that promotion of health is more important than curing the sick. Her contribution to practice became very useful in the nursing profession, especially the phases, namely: assesment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Her theory was really awesome.

A Pleasant Morning Mrs Oleresisimo,

I think that this article made me realize the the 14 Basice Needs of Henderson is really important when it comes to Nursing Care because the 14 Basic Needs of Human Being is really related to our daily life like for example when were breathing, eating, drinking and many more.It also showed me as a aspiring nurse someday that the nurse is not only as a helper of the sick because i thought before that the nurse are only a helpers of the sick because my knowledge about nursing is very little but now that i realize that there are soo many more to find out about them like for instance they can be also as a substitute for the patient and also as the partner too and most especially I thought also that there is only a 1 kind of relationship between a nurse, the one we called nurse-patient relationship, but also there also a nurse-physician relationship and nurse as a member of the health team. But now I can really show my classmates that I'm not that stupid, that I can really be a competent nurse someday.

And I thank you Mam for your Generosity for uploading this article for not just me but everyone who is interested in nursing, because I really learn more about it now.

Her theory of 14 basic needs of human thought me to avoid being 1 of the patients, by identifying which plans are meet or unmeet and find ways on how they can fully met its patients needs. This theory is not only acquired to the patient, it also help for each individual to determine whether they are physically, socially, intellectually and spiritually healthy.

14 components of nursing care..

She is an achiever personality. The honors bestowed on Henderson are numerous. She introduced the concept of mind and body of a person as inseparable or cannot be separated. She also gave emphasis in prioritizing health promotion as more important than care of the sick..

For her, if you had the 14 Basic Human Needs, you are healthy but if not, it only means that you are not healthy. It is simple and understandable..
