JOYCE TRAVELBEE (Human-to-Human Relationship Model )

JOYCE TRAVELBEE
(1926–1973)
Human-to-Human Relationship Model

“A nurse does not only seek to alleviate physical pain or render physical care – she ministers to the whole person. The existence of the suffering whether physical, mental or spiritual is the proper concern of the nurse.”
- Joyce Travelbee

Life Story
A psychiatric nurse, educator and writer born in 1926.

  • 1956, she completed her BSN degree at Louisiana State University
  • 1959, she completed her Master of Science Degree in Nursing at Yale University

Working Experiences:

  • 1952, Psychiatric Nursing Instructor at Depaul Hospital Affilliate School, New Orleans.
  • Also she taught at Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Louisiana State University, New York University and University of Mississippi.
  • 1970, the Project Director of Graduate Education at Louisiana State University School of Nursing until her death.
Publications:
  • 1963, started to publish articles and journals in nursing.
  • 1966 and 1971, publication of her first book entitled Interpersonal Aspects of Nursing.
  • 1969, when she published her second book Intervention in Psychiatric Nursing: Process in the One-to-One Relationship.

She started Doctoral program in Florida in 1973. Unfortunately, she was not able to finish it because she died later that year. She passed away at the prime age of 47 after a brief sickness.

Theoretical Sources

  • Catholic charity institutions
  • Ida Jean Orlando, her instructor—“The nurse is responsible for helping the patient avoid and alleviate the distress of unmet needs.” The nurse and patient interrelate with each other.
  • Viktor Frankl, a survivor of Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps—proposed the theory of logotherapy in which a patient is actually confronted with and reoriented toward the meaning of his life.

Nursing Metaparadigm
Person
- Person is defined as a human being.
- Both the nurse and the patient are human beings.
- A human being is a unique, irreplaceable individual who is in continuous process of becoming, evolving and changing.

Health
- Health is subjective and objective.
- Subjective health—is an individually defined state of well being in accord with self-appraisal of physical-emotional-spiritual status.
- Objective health—is an absence of discernible disease, disability of defect as measured by physical examination, laboratory tests and assessment by spiritual director or psychological counselor.

Environment
- Environment is not clearly defined.
- She defined human conditions and life experiences encountered by all men as sufferings, hope, pain and illness.

Illness – being unhealthy, but rather explored the human experience of illness

Suffering – is a feeling of displeasure which ranges from simple transitory mental, physical or spiritual discomfort to extreme anguish and to those phases beyond anguish—the malignant phase of dispairful “not caring” and apathetic indifference

Pain – is not observable. A unique experience. Pain is a lonely experience that is difficult to communicate fully to another individual.

Hope – the desire to gain an end or accomplish a goal combined with some degree of expectation that what is desired or sought is attainable

Hopelessness – being devoid of hope

Nursing
- Nursing is an interpersonal process whereby the professional nurse practitioner assists an individual, family or community to prevent or cope with experience or illness and suffering, and if necessary to find meaning in these experiences.”

Human-to-Human Relationship Model
- humanistic revolution

Interactional Phases of Human-to-Human Relationship Model:
1. Original Encounter
- First impression by the nurse of the sick person and vice-versa.
- Stereotyped or traditional roles
2. Emerging Identities
- the time when relationship begins
- the nurse and patient perceives each others uniqueness
3. Empathy
- the ability to share in the person’s experience
4. Sympathy
- when the nurse wants to lessen the cause of patient’s suffering.
- it goes beyond empathy—“When one sympathizes, one is involved but not incapacitated by the involvement.”
- therapeutic use of self
5. Rapport
- Rapport is described as nursing interventions that lessens the patient’s suffering.
- Relation as human being to human being
- “A nurse is able to establish rapport because she possesses the necessary knowledge and skills required to assist ill persons and because she is able to perceive, respond to and appreciate the uniqueness of the ill human being.”

*phases are in consecutive and developmental process.

Logical Form
- An inductive theory that uses specific nursing situations to create general ideas.

Application
Practice:
Hospice – self-actualizing life experience. Assumption of the sick role. Meaning of life and sickness and death.

Education:
Teaches nurses to understand the meaning of illness and suffering.

Research:
Applied in the theory of caring cancer patients.

Analysis
Clarity – is not consistent in clarity and origin.
1. Definition of terms came from dictionaries and books etc.
2. Used different terms for the same definition.
3. Focus more on adult individuals who are sick and the nurse’s role in helping them to find meaning in their sickness and suffering.
4. Deals in families and their needs but not in the community

Simplicity – not simple.
1. Contains different variables.

Generality – has wide scope of application but applicable only to those patients in distress and life changing events.

Empirical Precision – low measures of empirical soundness.
1. Result of lack of simplicity.
2. Defines concepts theoretically but does not define them operationally.
3. The model has not been tested.

Derivable Consequences – development of quality of caring.
1. It is useful because of its ability to describe, explain, predict and control a phenomena.
2. Explains the variables that affect the establishment of a therapeutic relationship between nurses and patients.
3. Lack of empirical precision also creates lack of usefulness.

CANCER... medically termed as CA or cellular aberration is one of the major cause of sufferings and death around the globe. It is cause by a carcinogen (cancer causing agent) and co-carcinogen (required for carcinogen to affect human cell and this was initiated by wrong and faulty lifestyle. A combined of these two produces cancer cell or oncogene which triggers cancerous characteristics by producing protein which accelerates multiplication of cells, increases its responsiveness and growth, thus cancer means any malignant growth in any part of the body which can metastasized or spread all over the body if severe or malignant... But whatever medical terms or meanings have used to refer to cancer, still cancer is a killer. Cancer is fate of hopelessness, a fate of sufferings... a fate of dying and death. It is a traitor, a disease that has been diagnosed on unexpected times when you have nothing to do but to wait for your time.

"It's cancer! The cancer cells have metastasized all over your body and its malignant. A chemotherapy can be of great help but you have nothing to do but to pray... only a miracle can save you ... You have only one short year to live." These were the words have said by my doctor six months ago and now, these are the words that keep on ringing into my ears every time I entered the chemotherapy room. A tinnitus that made me deaf and hopeless.

"Miss, your chemo is finish already, how does it feel? Are you feelin' good?", my chemotherapy nurse said as I replied with a coerce smile. What a question? Everyone knows how difficult it is to undergo chemotherapy, it causes pain and weakness to my body, troubles to my mind and cries to my heart. Those questions should not been asked, the answer is obvious. As my nurse continues, "Miss, its been 6 months of chemotherapy and ... ", I distracted her with my words, "and still I have cancer. 6 months ago, meaning I have 6 more months to wait for my death. What is the purpose of these chemotherapy anyway if still I have to die, this therapy is useless and this made me feel weak. And look at me, I'm dying. I do look like a corpse. My skin is desquamating my hairs begun to fall. Honestly, I started to count my last hair strands." Together with the fall of my hairs are the shattered of my dreams, washed-out of my youth and end of my value into this world. I am like a flamed candle that melts as the hour runs, a cigarette that little by little die and sand in the hour glass that become exhausted. I am useless! I'm just waiting for my death to be valuable. You know how? ... My body could be a great help for worms underground and soil fertilizer for plants and grasses over my tomb." My nurse replied, "Is that the only value you've considered to yourself? And that will gonna happen after your death and besides you are waiting for 6 months to be valuable for worms and plants only. Miss, you have 6 long months more to be valuable while you are living. Why don't you make the most of it? There are so many ways to be valuable, just only take all the opportunities that will knock on your door. Please think about it."

I am very young to die. How cruel of life it could be made me suffered like this way at my early age. On this moment on, I should attend different night life and parties as teenagers usually do. I should go to school and finish my chosen course. Perhaps ... I should be valuable. But this cancer ruined everything, it destroys me!, it destroys my cared beauty, made meweak and useless, made me old and fearful because of my appearance. I started to have bald-headed, my hair started to fall ... how could I go out and roamed around to enjoy my last days here on earth. I don't want to die, I want to become a successful woman, I want to build a big company, to be rich and famous. I want to raise a family of my own. I want to be valuable and fulfilled. Actually, I have so much opportunities to attain all of these, I am an only child of the richest couple in town. I am young, fresh, popular, intelligent and beautiful. But all of these have nothing to do with cancer... all have faded. Before I am a very brave and courageous young lady taking up political science for I want to be a lawyer someday, a fighter fighting for one's right and now I am a useless ill lady whose coward and frightened. I want to fight for my right, my right to live... my right for my life. But fate is so cruel. If s not even, I don't have any armor to fight the battle. If s not right! It is so unfair for not giving me a chance ... a chance to prove something, to be successful, to be fulfilled... to be valuable.

As my car runs along the road on my way back home while having my sensible thoughts, I have witnessed a crime, a victim of hit-and-run. With the help of my personal driver and yaya, we brought this young 20 years old man to the hospital and the surgeon's diagnosis is a simple fracture of the tibial bone of his right leg, lucky for him as a vehicular accident victim. But not 'till he woke up and complained of absence of eyesight or blindness and his opthalmologist found out that fragments of his broken eyeglasses have drawn into his eyes and his doctor suggested evisceration or removal of the contents of the eyeball only living outer sclera and muscle to prevent further spread of infections and complications and to save optical nerves from damage. Michael had underwent an emergency eye surgery and as a result he could not see ... he is totally blind. And the only way for him to see is the eye transplant. I found out that he is living in the squatter's area in Quezon City with his live-in partner Elena, 20 years old and their daughter Michaela Elleine, a 6 months old baby girl. And according to Michael he was on his way searching for a job when the accident happened. Due to early marriage and poverty, I have realized that Michael has nothing to pay for the bills of the hospital so I've decided to have some charitable deeds. After Michael's operation on the same day, I went to his house and I found out that Elena is lying on the bed of sic kness because of her heart ailments which was worsened by her delivery to their first baby. As she discovered what happened to her husband, she experienced difficulty of breathing and chest pain that leads to heart attack and we brought her to the hospital where Michael was confined. And again, I accepted the load of their hospital bills. Michael was very weak and blind, he does not know where is his family located and Elena was still on ICU (Intensive Care Unit) waiting for a heart donor for transplant and she was totally alone for her family was a victim of fire in Tondo two years ago. And Michaela Elleine was left alone like an abandoned child. I have nothing to do but to adopt this little poor child as long as her parents recovered or someone claims her.

I have realized how lucky I am despite of my condition and I am not the only unfortunate person, there are many others whose much worst and unfortunate than me ... much oppressed. With my very young age considering my condition, I started to become an instant mother to an instant baby girl. I have experienced to slept late at night because I have to read her my favorite bedtime stories and to wake in the middle of the night for her bottlefeed milk or changed her diapers. I have witnessed her first crawl, first sit, first stand and first steps which are all missed by her biological mother. And the most heart breaking experience is that when I have heard her voice as she speaks, "Mi-Mi", which I thought its mommy. Her cries serve as sirene which means she needs me and her smile and laughter told me "thank you" , both brings an innate joy to my soul. I have learned a lot from taking good care of her ... I've learned how to become a mother and how I wish to be the one. And now, I know how does my mother feels when I'll pass away and I feel so lonely and sorry for that... but it is our fate.

Everyday after my therapy, together with Michaela we visited her parents and after that is her monthly check-up to her pediatrician.

Days, weeks and months passed rapidly with Michaela, I really forgot about my illness... my cancer and I forgot about dying that I have only remaining 6 months to live. Not until I have noticed the passed of time one day when I woke-up very weak and tired, its hard for me to move and get-up on bed. I feel boneless. My eyes feels so heavy considering that I have a complete hours of sleep and my vision was blurred, I look at the mirror and put-off my wig, I applied some oil on my scalp and removed the sticking fallen hair and I found out that I am bald already, I have few hair strands scattered all over my head and I counted it ... its 31 all in all long hair strands which before long, silky wavy blonde hair naturally. I have remaining 31 days to go. I have realized that its getting nearer, my time is over. 5 very short months passed rapidly and I have still one month to go. Now, I am not thinking about myself anymore, my concerns are all for Michaela and what I have wished for myself is "Please LORD, let me witness Michaela's first birthday."

For 3 weeks, I got busy preparing Michaela's birthday party and of signing different contracts, forms, last will and testaments inspite of my worsen condition because I have so many reasons to be strong and that are my ambitions and dreams to be fulfilled, successful and valuable. And on the first day of my last week, we celebrated Michaela Elleine's first birthday party.

6 days to go before my countdown is over, it seems that its like yesterday that I'm waiting for another 6 months to passed, feel frightened and coward to die trying to push the days ahead. And now again inside of this four-cornered white room in front of my nurse, I put-off my wig and decided to removed it permanently as long as I am living ... for 6 days. I have combed my 6 long hair strands that are tightly attached to my scalp and it seems like me holding so tight for my life. But like my hair strands which falls everyday, I am preparing for my omega. And she asked, "How does it feel?", then I simply smiled at her down to my heart and replied, " I know my time is over ... I have accepted my fate."

I can die now, I am successful and fulfilled. I have proven something to myself and I can say that I am valuable not only for worms and plants but because I have value in the real sense in this world. Considering my age and condition, I am very lucky and too successful for I have attained my dreams. I have built a big building for the needy and for 6 months I have raised a family by helping Michael's family and I become a mother with Michaela. I become an attorney by fighting for the right of Michael's family ... the right to live and the right for life.

LORD is so great to me for giving me such opportunities before of my death. My nurse was right, there are so many ways to be valuable. I gave my light to Michael, the life to Elena and my love and caring to Michaela Elleine. And even when I am on my eternal life, I am sure that I'm still helping so many angels like Michaela, times the thousands of my hair strands fallen with a cause. Because my hair strand is equal to my value into this world and now I am waiting for the fall of my one last hair strand.

"Okay, Miss, if s time for you to sleep and have some rest", my nurse said and then I replied as she holds my hand, "Thank you very much!", with a big smile. And as I closes my eyes, after of a deep breath my last hair strand fall on the floor.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

I, whose name at the undersigned was leaving my both eyes to Michael and my heart to Elena for transplant immediately after my death and I am leaving Medical Plan worth of P l, 000, 000. 00 for their hospitalization.

I am also leaving them P50,000.00 for their wedding and another P50,000.00 for Michaela Elleine's baptismal plus one-fourth of my riches and properties inherited from my parents with an Educational Plan. And the three-fourth will be going to the orphanage I have signed with contract which has to be open soon.

To my parents, I am leaving all of my happiness and memories with you.

To all of you, especially to my nurse, thank you very much for giving me the reason to live and making me valuable.

A Lady With No Hair

human to human relationship of joyce travelbee inspires me a lot.because of her theory, i found out that a good relationship to patient and to all the people that surrounds me is needed.especially when i read the story of my clinical instuctor in theoretical foundation in nursing,Mrs.Danela Oloresisimo which is the last hair strand, my tears fell. I realized that there so many things that we can do to help needy person. even if you dont know the person that much, what is important , you know how to relate yourself to others.

Joyce Travelbee tragically died young at the age of 47 while beginning doctoral study.

"HUMAN-TO-HUMAN RELATIONSHIP MODEL",Joyce Travelbee's theory suggests that a positive nurse-patient relationship can bring about a favorable patient outcome. She felt nursing needed a "humanistic revolution" and a renewed focus on caring as central to nursing.

Joyce Travelbee always refer that if a patient is sick it is in pain and sufferings. Her definitons are everything in pain, hopeless, sufferings, illness, etc. that a person is experiencing.

Her theory is applicable especially in the cancer patient wherein it really helps the patient a lot to accept the fact that she is sick.Cancer is known for being one of the killer disease and the cause of sufferings around the world,it is a traitor.

"THE LAST HAIR STRAND" written by our TFN teacher, MRS. DANELA OLORESISIMO of SLSU-LUCBAN. In this novel shows the Human-to-Human Relationship of Travelbee, where the nurse, and the doctor is there to tell the patient that she must be thankful in her last hour of her life. For God given her the last minute to help other people. That every minute of the patient's life is very essntial.

Because of the chemotheraphy, the strands of hair, falling down to the floor, and that it cause weakness to patient's body, she felt hopeless. But she helped the victim of hit and run.She gave her eyes to Michael, and she gave life--a better life for Michaela. And she thought that her life is worth living. That the lady with no hair is thankful for giving reasons to live.

Ma'am,
Thanks for the novel,it is a heartbreaking story that you wrote. The stories that you shared, touches my life, especially when you told us that even in the last hour of the person he is still thinking of his love ones like in the stories of your patients,"THE CAB DRIVER" and "THE GOOD FATHER".

Even though Joyce Travelbee's life is short, she contributed a lot in nursing profession leaving her Human-to-Human Relationship theory. Nursing field is grateful because of her works especially her theory. Her untimely loss worth all the honors and awards she received and to be recognized as a nursing theorist after her death.

The novel was really impressive and heartfelt. An inspiring story that proves us that everything happens for a reason. It reminds us that despite of all the trials we encounter we should be thankful because it is God's will. The novel also makes us realized that every individual has a mission in life that we have to fulfill.

The heartbreaking story reflects Travelbee's theory because her concepts and definitions contain pain, illness, hopelessness, and suffering in which was the character in the story portray but the difference is that she still gave a positive outlook in life despite of her long sufferings. She also inspires others rather than giving more pain and stress to others.

The theory of Joyce Travelbee, Human to Human Relatinship gives nurses ways on how the patients accept their illness. The story by Mrs. Oloresisimo is very inspiring for me as a student because it made me realized that now, I have opportunities to help the less fortunate people before experiencing any sickness. This story is an application to the theory of Joyce Travelbee because at first the patient with cancer didn't accept her illness and she is always thinking on why she is experiencing this difficulty but when she helped the victim of the hit and run and knew the situation of his family she realized that she is not that unfortunate and already knew why God gave her cancer. Before leaving the world, the patient understood her situation and the reasons of having cancer is to helped others. She accepted also her sickness with the help of her nurse which is also stated in Human to Human Relationship Model that nurse should help their patient to accept their illness. This Novel is very inspiring!

hUman-to-human relationship mOdel of Joyce Travelbee gives me an idea on how I can comfort my patient in the future. She inspires me because even she died at the age of 47 she left us her theory with her love for her patient and care for them. When I read the story of our CI in TFN,"the last hair stand"..I was touched that time and my tears fell while Im reading the story. I feel that I am the cancer patient who will donate my organs. Even if we really don't know the person we will meet in the future they are the one that makes as realize that "money and popularity is not important, but love and care for others are the best thing that we can left when it's our time to leave here on earth".So I can say now, learn to love and know the person around you and apply Travelbee's Human-to-Human Relationship Model.

joyce travelbee was born on 1926 and died on 1973 at the age of 47. she had complered her bsn degree and master of science degree.when she was in her doctoral program in 1973, she later died so she didn't completed her doctoral program.
she contributed the human-to-human relationship model wher the interactional phases are being undergo. these interactional phrases are the:
1.original encounter, wherein the nurse and the patient first encounter.
2. emerging identities, wherein the nurse and the patient becomes comfortable with each other or the phase where the bond of relationship begins to form.
3. emphaty, the ability to share in person's experiences.
4. sympathy, goes beyond emphaty, this is the intervention of the nurse to lessen the patient's suffering.
5. rapport, occurs when the nurse desires to alleviate the cause of suffering and illness.

she defines person as a human being and both nurse and patient are human being.human being are unique, irreplaceable individual that is in the continuous process of becoming, evolving and changing.health in her theory is measured by subjective and objective data.the environment is not included but she include in this the suffering, pain, hope and illness.

the novel entitled "the last strand" made me think of something. i was touched by this novel, the lesson that the author emphasizes clearly came upon me right across my heart. i have no relatives and friends having cancer so at first,i thought i cannot relate with the situation.but when i began to read this novel, i feel myself putting onto the narrator's feelings and situation. if i were her, i will not accept easily that i have a cancer and i will think that i am useless and God let that happen to me. but somehow i will think that God do not want us to be in danger and trouble without any good reason. every decisions that God has made and those that will be made has an important reason. like what the narrator experienced. she already have all the riches, popularity, intelligence and beauty but it is not the exception of having cancer, cancer is a killer that attacks anyone. if i am in her situation, i will accept that i have a cancer even though it is hard. i will spent the time left in helping others because i want to die with succession during the time that i am alive. being successful not just in my field but succession in myself, in my heart, soul and spirit by helping others who needed help. if i successfully made this part, i will allow myself to die, wait for my time and cherish the remaining time in praying and saying goodbye to my love ones.

this story made me feel sad and my heart melted,i think this will affect me even at the time of bed because i will put myself into the shoes of the narrator's feelings.

The decision of the lady to give up chemotherapy made it possible for her, to meet the man of Michaela. Truly cancer is a very difficult disease to cure. And the bravery of the the lady to face the truth, that it's hopeless for her to overcome that trial in her life. And the intervention of the nurse to make the lady realize her calling demonstrates the effectiveness of joyce travelbee's theory. The nurse is the one who fed the idea to the lady of purpose searching before she dies. There are wonders in God's work that even the smartest human could not understand. How did their path's converge in the same direction is truly a miracle. And her decisions to make Ellaine and her family the beneficiary of her properties that she left behind is a mature thing to do. Joyce's theory projects the interventions of a nurse to bring back the patient to reality and give her insights, and it is very evident in this novel.

nursing is caring. the major goal of the nurse is to assists sick and even well persons, and of course, giving care together with the comfort. care is the major essentials of nursing. when we say and talk about nurses, we actually first think that this persons give care to patients. we have different nurses assigned to different sections but the goal of this nurses are all the same.

This theory of Joyce Travelvee helps me lot in my practice because her theory is about the relationship between nurse and the patient. I learn that a stranger person that needs help is the important no matter that you don't know that person is. Just relate to that person and serve them as well.

The memory of joyce travelbee leave a mark not only in the field of nursing but in the whole world because eventhough she died early her work really helps alot for the nurse and for the people in interacting to each other
She made an idea on how to make all things beautiful until the last breath of our lives, she spend her life and time in doing something that gives a big impact to our community.
It is really hard to admit that you have a disease or sickness ,an example is Ms.joyce, although she was the one who makes the theory of human to human relationship, joyce travelbee herself did'nt know how to apply it,and that what lyf is!!I think it is the nature of man to not to admit her fate but its only in the start,God has always a plan in everything happens!!

Joyce Travelbee has many achievements in her Life. But she passed away in her young age 47. And after she died she became known but in her life she was just a normal people with normal life. her Sources comes from Catholic charity institutions,Ida Jean Orlando and Viktor Frankl.
In nursing metaparadigm she define person as a human being, health; it has 2 classifications subjective and objective health and environmant is not exactly defined but it affect the persons health and by the environment a person could have illness, sufferings, hope and pain.
In the human to human relationship she said that nurses should have a good impression in her first encounter to her patient and it should last, communication and interating to each other properly, share everything to the patient, making the feelings of the patient more positive, and should lessen the suffering of the patient. And also because of her concepts it is expected that she could be suffering from cancer. So she started to conceptualize this theory. And in her doctoral degree she died.
In "THE LAST HAIR STRAND" by our teacher Mrs. Oloresisimo, it apply the theory of joyce travelbee wherein the nurse should tell the positive side of the suffering of the patient.Wherein the patient must appreciate the time that she is alive. And must not waste her remaining time. And we all know that God does'nt give challenges that we cound'nt solve. God is just testing us on how to make our life useful in his creations and even to him.

Thank you for this article ma'am Oloresisimo

Like other nursing theorist, Joyce Travelbee deserves everything most especially being a part of nursing history. Her achievements and work absolutely mark not only in nursing but also in the world because of her theory of human-to-human relationship, which helps everyone to interact with each other. She died at the early age of 47, but that is not the end of her career as nursing because her presence is still there and her theory helps a lot in way. She opens our mind in the fact that life is beautiful and everything is fine. She gave her best in serving or caring people not only in their community but also in different part of the world. In her theory, she assumed that the nurse should help the patient to lessen their suffering from their sickness.
In the journal reading here entitled “THE LAST HAIR STRAND” the nurse could apply the theory of Joyce Travelbee because the nurse must let her/his patient look in the positive way for them to help them selves to feel better or to lessen their suffering. It is hard for the patient to accept their condition but they must learn to accept it for their sake. It is a matter of acceptance; the nurse must help the patient to understand it. Because everything has a reason.

I can say that Joyce Travelbee really had a “good run”. She lived her life and made the best out of it.

Her theory helped change the nurses of today. Having this kind of relationship to your patient can help close the gap between nurses and patient.

Joyce Travelbee mentioned Rapport, when I was in high school my teacher once defined rapport as the act of being one, and I think this is also what Joyce meant. A nurse must be “one” with his patient to better understand his or her condition and promote faster healing.

The Last Hair strand, I enjoyed reading the story/novel (though it took me quite a time to read it.)

It’s a story about how a dieing patient made her remaining life as meaningful as possible. It made me realized that if a dieing patient can think of helping others despite of her condition, why can’t we do the same? We’re healthy, young, we can do so many things to help others. Going back to the story, what really made my tears fell is that even at the last breath of the cancer patient, all she could ever think of is to help and make others happy… even after she died.

This is a novel worth remembering ^^

"JOYCE TRAVELBEE (Human-to-Human Relationship Model)"
Joyce Travelbee- a psychiatric nurse, educator and writer who was born in 1926.
Her work about human-to-human relationship shows how to interact with a person, patient and so fort in order for them to understand their status in life and for them to gain hope as well.
Her work is a great help to the development of quality of caring.
Because of her work, the ability of a nurse to describe, explain, predict and to control any phenomena was develop.
Actually I admire her work especially when I read the article that Maam wrote “The Last Hair Strands”. The nurse in Maam’s journal showed the human-to-human relationship that made the patient realize that her condition is still fortunate than others.
This journal is really awesome. While I was reading it I felt so fortunate because not everyone gets to study. I also realize that nurses really have a great contribution to any patient not only as partners of doctors but also as a person to give care, help and etc.
This is why I also want to thank Mrs. Oloresisimo for her journal cause its really an inspiration to readers who read this journal.

Perhaps the author’s issue about Joyce’s Travelvee life that she suffered in cancer during her doctoral program is quite true. As I observed, her articles which is all about illness, pain, suffering, hopelessness, hope is her way of relieving of her emotions which she kept in herself in private. I agreed that what our mind touches in, it is what we are always express almost time and I concluded that Joyce’s Travelvee expressed her thoughts mostly in her articles, poems and books and also in her definitions in metaparadigm of nursing.

I am also quite disappointed that she died in a fresh age. Maybe she could spend a lot of contributions in nursing if she didn’t died in her early age. Maybe that’s the big factor that her life isn’t like an open book like Henderson, Peplau, and Nightingale. But that’s the truth that we must accept and everything has a reason why it happened.

Theory:

In her Interaction phases, nurses must make the impression of illed person be the best because 1st impression would last. We as nurses should help our patient to move on and look forward in new goals than to let our self be the one who affect by their emotions.

In her way, she defined some concepts from the different sources and not from her personal definition. There are a lot of variables inher theories which pertains that her theory is complex.

Also it is limited in use of settings and it is not tested and has a low measure of empirical soundness

Life is really unpredictable, you can never know what will happen next. It is within ourselves to fine ways how to enjoy it and to make it worthy... as the saying goes "live life to the fullest..
There are many trials that we can't avoid. Like what happened to this woman,. It is like a very dark night where you cant see any light, like a war where you don't have any armor.

She reached the point where she asked God why she needs to have cancer, and it happens to us that sometimes we asked him WHY?
This story is very touching and inspiring. It makes me realize how lucky I am despite of all the imperfections. Life is too short, yet it is colorful..
We are all exist for a reason, all we need to do is to explore and appreciate it.,, Just like this girl who learned to accept his condition and see the beauty of life by helping others....

Joyce Travelbees's Human-to-Human Relationship shows the patient how to accept their disorders or illness. Even though she died early, she have contributed many things that able to help the nurses in enhancing their care and relationship to the patients. Mrs. Oloresisimo's novel The Last Hair Strand showed me how to really appreciate life because we should be thankful that we do not have any illness. Travelbee’s theory was applied when the nurse let the patient realize that she can still do valuable things. The patient already accepts her illness and she is able to help a family when she adopts a child named Michaela for as long as her parents have recovered. Then before she died she write on her last will that she will leave her eyes to Michael and her heart to Elena then she gave one fourth of her reaches to Michaela. Then above all she is very thankful because she has done valuable things before she died.

JOYCE TRAVELBEE(1926-1973)"Human-Human Relationship"
Betty Neumans inspire me a lot. Although she died at the age of 47 she lefts her theory with her love and caring for the patient.. As i was reading the life of "THE LAST HAIR STRAND" as times goes by, our life have value in the real sense in this world. As the story says, we have so many reasons to be strong and that our ambitions and dreams to be fulfilled, successful and valuable.

Human-to-Human Relationship model helped the career patient cope up with his/her illness. It helps the patient to accept the condition and in this case the nurse is the one who is responsible in providing information and assistance to the patient.

Additionally, her theory includes the holistic care approach where in nurse attempts to build rapport with the patient, that enables the patient to understand their illness that gives a positive reason to continue living.

Joyce Travelbee's theory, Human to Human Relationship Model, plays an important role because both nurse and patient must build a good relationship. The nurse must know how to make the patient accept his sickness and how to understand the real essence of life. Travelbee's life according to some people is full of suffering. And maybe it's right because it reflects through her definitions in her theory.

The Last Hair Strand is a very good example of Travelbee's theory. It touches my heart because inspite of having a cancer of the woman in the story, she chose to be a fighter for other people. She becomes hope for a family who suffer so much pain and problems than her. And I realized that even people who suffer pain and hindrances in life, people who become hopeless and weak can give new life and light to others.

And so, thank you Ma'am Danela for sharing us your novel. May you inspire more people to live in their fullest and be brave in handling such problems, for there is no possible for God.

travelbee's concept of the environment may be due to the condition that she had endured but still, her life was one of the most realistic evidences of what her theory really emphasizes...

it is really not just a goal or a mere responsibility but is such a nurse' pleasure and privilege to be able to establish and achieve an effective rapport with her patients regardless of how complex the condition is...

pain, suffering illness seemed to be synonymous with one another according to travelbee but with these concepts, she was able to come up with such contribution which was greatly depicted in the "Last Hair Strand".

it was such an excruciating thought...dying of an early age... when you are practically dreaming of spending your life to its fullest, with the hope of achieving this for a long period of time...

even i myself, after reading the first parts of the short story felt the hopelessness... the feeling internalizes so much that it lingers... the consequences of undergoing chemotherapy is less painful than bearing the fact that you are bound to spend the remaining seconds of your life to wait for one thing that you have not longed to have... death...

the last hair strand portrayed the the sincerity of the nurse's words to the lady...

her life, although conforming with the diminishing population of her hair strands was indeed turned to a worthwhile one... despite the approaching arrival of her death, she was able to render herself as a mother, a hand of generosity, a light for michael's darkened world and a beating heart for michael's wife...

through the lady's life experience, she had become a example of what travelbee's theory signifies.. and for me, as it's only implied, unconsciously, the lady had also played a role of a nurse as she had extended "what she had"...

"nursing is the signature of our profession and its purpose is to create a tightly-bonded relationship with our patients...
a good rapport that will give birth to alleviation of one's feeling of being doomed.."

This is through my better communication and relationship with her.

This theory will particularly helps the cancer patients because through the practice of human-human relationship, it will enable the patient not only to accept his illness but will also serve as a self-actualizing experience.

Ma’am Oloresisimo’s “The Last Hair Stand”, really touched my heart and made me feel that I’m lucky to take this course. THE LAST HAIR STRANDS

The story is so heartbreaking, but I know it’s happen in real life. Joyce Travelbee is right, as a nurse we should aid the physical appearance of the patient as well as his mental and spiritual health.

The situation that the lady overcomes was very difficult. It teaches us how to become strong in the predicaments that comes through our lives. Everything has a purpose. In the story the purpose of the lady is to give light to every angel like Michaela.

There is hunger and suffering on earth not because God give is us to little for our needs but because in our excitement over these gifts we have forgotten the giver and his call, to break the bread and pass it around our neighborhoods.

“Life is too short to do everything we want to do; but it is long enough for us to do everything GOD wants us to do.”

THE LIFE OF JOYCE TRAVELBEE

The life of Travelbee is too short. I think she will have many contributions in nursing practice if she didn’t die earlier.

HUMAN-TO-HUMAN RELATIONSHIP MODEL

The Human-to-Human Relationship Model of Travelbee has an essential part in Nursing Practice especially to those Cancer patients. It helps the patient to accept their situation. It also builds a good relationship with the patient and the nurse.

Joyce Travelbee, Human-to-Human Relationship, it states that nursing care needed a "humanistic revlolution" a return to focus on the caring function towards the ill person. But Ida Jean Orlando's theory has similarities to the model of Travelbee where "the patient interrelate with each other and by her description of the purpose of Nursing". In her human-to-human relationship model, the nurse and the patient must follows the interactional phase: Original Encounter, Emerging Identities, Empathy, Sympathy and Rapport. I realized that she focuses on suffering, pain, illness, hope and hopelessness.

I really like "The Last Hair Strands" written by our clinical instructor Mrs. Danela Oloresisimo. It really touches my heart after I had read it. Eventhough a person is hopeless because of Cancer, also called in medical terms as CA, cellular aberration it is the caused of pain and suffering of this young lady, who had great dreams in her life, to be valued and successful lawyer someday but how she can fulfill if she is dying. But great opportunities in her life came, God gave her chance to be valued. She had a chance to help one family Michael where she lighted this man's life by donating her eyes, Elena, Michael's wife where she gave her heart and on their daughter Michaela Ellein, this cancer patient serves as the second parents while Michael and Elena are confined in the hospital. The word "Mi-Mi" that Michaela said really touches my heart because Ma'am Danela's daughter named Darla also calls her "Mi-Mi". The Cancer patient didn't even noticed that her time is getting over before she had rest and sleep she fulfilled her dreams. God had reasons in everything.

But despite of these achievements, I think that Joyce Travelbee’s life is very sad. You can see this on her works and definitions of term. It is all about pain, sufferings, hopelessness and others.

Even though Joyce Travelbee’s life is too short she should also be considered as a living legend like Nightingale, Peplau and Henderson.

It's so sad to hear that after her death she was awarded as one of the theorists. How Unfortunate! If I were in her shoes. I would surely felt sadness that is way too hard to bare because I know how it feels like to leave this temporary place with dreams unfulfilled. If only I have supernatural powers, I will bring her back from the dead, but since I'm just an ordinary person with a very extraordinary life- all I can do is to mourn on such a fate.

On the bright side, her theory gave light to me on my search for meaning, because you know cancer patients aren't the only ones who self pity themselves for obtaining an uncurable disease. Her theory reintroduced me to light and contentment. Light because I was enlightened to think positively at all times, and contentment because I search for meaning to complete my insecurities and low self-esteem due to low social interaction brought by my insecurities.

Now,I feel a new life full of hope and contentment. Thanks to Travelbee.

About the article, I'm not thrilled by the story. Why? because Mam Dani have already told us about it.

On the other hand, the first time I heard this from Mam Dani, I almost cried. It was indeed heart-touching, especially the part where the last will and testament was stated. I was expecting already what would happen to Michael and Michaela but the part of Elena and the worms was unexpected.

This story made me laugh, be inspired to face the challenges of life that is as challenging as having a cancer, and most especially to cry all at the same time.

Thank you Mam Dani for sharing to us your masterpiece. I hope it will continue touching others' lives.

I think she seldom socialize and interact wiht others because there were only few people know her. She is a school-house woman. Unfortunately, she was not able to finish her study because she died. Her death is a herth-warming one. There's an information that cancer is the cause of her death and we all know that it is hard for a person to have one because once you have it, only miracle can cure it. So eventhough her life was too short, she made it meaningful. By her Human-to-Human relationship model, she was able to help other cancer patients like her on how to carry their sickness.

And for the story written by our very own Mrs. Danela Oloresisimo, I just wanna say this "I don't want to see my self with only one last hairstrand",,

joyce travelbee's human to human relationship helped me to understand the value of being a friend to the patient.

but it is kinda sad to know that for Travelbee, environment is considered suffering, pain and illness, environment affects the health of the patients.

but based on her theory, what do nurses need to do, is to relate themselves with their patients, and as much as possible, we nurses are the one's responsible to give courage and hope to the patients.

The theory of miss Joyce Travelbee about human-to-human relationship model teaches a professionals or even the unprofessional to seek not only the physical pain o r give physical care, but she must also focused on the whole person, his/her physical, mental, social and most importantly is the spiritual.
and her theory elaborates the ways on how the patient and her family to overcome the situation the patient is undergoing.Gives the way on how to have a harmonious relationship between the patient and the nurse to fasten the recovery. and also help the patient to accept her situation with the help of the nurses and doctors and will help the patient know that the situation given to her has reasons to help her became a better person.

and about the journal the last hair strand it show that the patient first don't know how to accept her condition but with the help of the nurse that uses Travelbees theory about human-to-human relationship model it makes the patient realize that God has a good reason for that situation... after experiencing and witnessing the situation of a family it makes the patient to be a better person to help the person in need with her own wealthiness and also her body organs just to show her love and care.. The nurse really helps the patient to have a open heart and mind...

Ma'am thanks for the journal it helps us to better understand Human-to-human relationship model..may God Bless You always... Thanks for all the information that will help us in our studies...

Similar to other theories, Joyce Travelbee is such a great gift to nursing profession. Her works are another one of a kind contribution which helps the whole world to improve the quality of care giving. Her Human to Human Relationship Model have greatly influenced the hospice progress which guides nurses to help patients to lessen their pain by giving emotional, spiritual and physical support. Her model guides to develop feelings of empathy and sympathy, until the nurse and patient attain rapport in the final stage.

In the journal “The Last Hair Strands”, the nurse responsibility is to reduce the pain that the patient anguish and teach the client to accept her situation, that for every difficulty, God only knows the reason for that!, and God has good intention why He gave that condition to her and gave her a meaningful life.

Joyce Travelbee's "Human-to-Human Relationship" is very much important to the nursing practice and also to the patient that is given a certain treatment/intervention to his illness and the patient must accept his illness. As the nurse intervene the patient, he must undergo to the five stages of human-to-human relationship model to achieve the complete therapy to the patient and also to have a deeper understanding about one another.

As i have read the story that Mrs. Oloresisimo written, the CANCER which is a killer to the patient is somewhat an enemy to deal/fight with. In the story, the main character is suffering from this ailment and undergoing to some treatment, one of those is chemo. She did not like to live anymore because even these treatments are given to her, she felt like weak, look like a corpse, and useless. As her hair began to fall, she met the family of Michael that made her life important. When she died, she give her properties and money to them and also her life to them.

I did not control my emotion when I read this story because I realized that even the person is in suffering, she manage to help others in giving her life and money to the family that is in great need....

Thank you for that wonderful story..... I am surely grateful to read that....

In human to human relationship of Joyce Travelbee it gaves a greater impact on one's personality in which students, nurses and other health professionals must be able to cope up to the situation we will encounter in our daily living. We must know how to become a good health care provider in such a way that we will need to become sensitive on ones' feelings especially to those people that needs a sufficient time and lots of caring. Through human to human relationship we develop our self to become an effective and efficient communicator. Always remember that we must need to put ourselves in the situation of the others for us to become an effective health care provider.

JOYCE TRAVELBEE a psychiatric nurse, educator and writer who made the Human-to-Human Relationship Model, a humanistic revolution that help in the field of nursing especially for the ones who were suffering from a deadly disease called "cancer."

These theory helps in self-actualizing life expirience, assumption of the sick role, and the realization of the meaning of life, sickness and death. This have the Interactional Phases which are the: Original Encounter, Emerging Identities, Empathy, Sympathy, and Rapport. She also defined illness, suffering, pain, hope and hopelessness.

Meanwhile after I have heared and read the story entitled "The Last Hair Strand," i've realized that life isn't unfair like the other people are always saying, it's just God have all his reason why somethiong's happening in our lives even if it is positive or negative for us, in God's might all our uncertainties became all right, God have plans for us. "The Last Hair Strands"

After reading the novel, I stopped for a while. I feel so different, mixed-emotions inside. I felt sad but happy at the same time. It's an inspiring-heartful story. The story really touched my heart, I want to cry, but I stopped it. Eventhough I don't have any relatives or friends with cancer, I related myself to the novel. It captured my heart and the whole self of me.

Each and every part/scene in the novel made me realize that all the things that are happening to us have a reason of its own. If time comes that the biggest problem of our life strikes us, never give up... fight for it! God leads the way to lessen the pain and to overcome the challenges.

The cancer patient in "The Last Hair Strands" had a very excellent and worthful time in her life. She used the remaining time of her life wisely and she enjoyed life to the fullest.

If I will be a nurse, and if I will have a patient with cancer, I will also help the patient to see the true value of life. I know that it is not easy but no matter how hard it is, I will show my full devotion... and I will serve 'till I live!

Joyce Travelbee whose born on 1926, and died at her prime age of 47.

She developed her theory the human to human relationship that give me some knowledge and understanding how to give care to both sick and well individual but what most important is to those people who experienced illness like cancer. As she refer the person as a human being a unique and irreplaceable individual, that has diferrent behavior, it is important to a nurse to give an appropriate care to the patient, must have a wide understanding and knowledge.

While reading the novel it really touched my heart, it shows that everything in our life happens for a reason, meaning to say whatever happen it is god's will and God has a purpose why he give us problems that we have to face. On the journal Joyce Travelbee's theory is applicable in a way that when the person itself accept the fact of having cancer even at the beginning it was hard for the person to accept it, for the person itself experienced suferrings to that illness that made her hopeless and for her doing chemotherapy was no sense for someday somehow her life would ended but because there was something happened it helped her to realize how lucky she was and ready to accept the ill she had. I love this novel because it really inspires me, I realize how lucky I am. Thanks ma'am for showing to us this kind of novel.

Joyce Travelbee’s Human-to-Human relationship Model was very applicable to cancer patients. Because most of her description of the environment was full of suffering, pain, hopelessness and illness. Maybe you’re chika ma’am is right. That Travelbee has a cancer.

I was really touched by the journal that I’ve read. Imagine that by just of the accident, the life of the woman with cancer changed. Before, she really was not ready to face her fate. Because according to her, she has many plans to fulfill to. And she blamed God on why she had that cancer. But after the accident happened, she realized the worth of her days left to live. She realized that she still was the luckiest cancer-patient ever. With her wealth, she helped Mang Michael’s family. She paid for his and his live-in partner’s hospitalization. She didn’t waste the opportunity to donate her eyes to Michael and her heart to Elena. And her dream to have a family was fulfilled in few months with Michaela Elleine. She was then contented and accepted her fate. She realize her value and that’s one thing important there.

I learned from this story that we should learn to cherish every day of our life. Every minute is important. Knowing or not knowing when we will die, we must be doing the right and ahead of our dream. We should not be hopeless. There are so many things to think positive of. Let’s just look on the bright side.

Ma’am, you’re such a great writer. Thanks for sharing this short novel of yours to us. I really thank God for letting us know you. I learn a lot from your sharings of your knowledge and experiences, and also the chikas. More chikas to come. Hehe!

Joyce Travelbee, a private woman with alot of wisdom. She had created the Human-to-Human Relationship model.

Human-to-Human Relationship Model helped patients to accept their sickness most especially those who have cancer.Cancer is one of the illness that people wants to avoid.

The Last Hair Strands, a novel written by our C.I., Mrs. Danela Oloresisimo was so inspiring because it deals with a person with cancer whom she think her life was so useless.

Witnessing the crime, she realized that every strand of hair that falls, there's hope and her life was worthwhile.

All that she ever hoped for happened as time goes by. She became a mother to the child named Michaela, and a lawyer to fight for the his rights and the right to live.

Even though she passed away, she would always stay in the heart of the persons that she had helped.

"whatever illness which may come to you, just have faith in God and he'll be there for you,it'a a matter of acceptance".

..she gave meaning on this..as the theory describes, giving meaning on this things is helping patients seek thier own selves..

..the novel is a good example of the application of the human to human relationship model..because as the cancer victim go along her way...she realize that it is better to accept her situation than deny to her self that she will leave the world soon,at the same time she was able to help a family...

Joyce Travelbee's formulation of her theory "Human to Human Relationship Model" was greatly influenced me by her experiences in nursing education and practice. She concluded that the nursing care rendered to patients in these institutions lacked compassion. The importance of her theory is about how the nurse and patient interrelate with each other. The nurse should help the patient to lessen the cause of suffering and help them understand and accept their sickness. The two of them should also shared their experiences with each other.

Travelbee's theory tells about the wholeness of a person as having the physical, spiritual, and mental aspects of one's life. It also describes how beautiful life is and how great the time is as a gift of God even the single second that will later last. No matter what is the patient's circumstance, a nurse should make him understand why is he undergoing such conditions.

As what Mrs. Oloresisimo said about her perception, maybe Travelbee who died at an early age suffered a severe illness because she defines her environment as suffering or pain. Sad to think because perhaps she can do even more that will contribute a lot to nursing when she did not already died. But as what she says, there's a purpose why a person experiences different problems.

The story of "The Last Hair Strand" is an example of Travelbee's theory. The story is heartwarming and inspiring for me to think positively about life. The main character in the story is mighty in that even in her last hair strand, she was able to help someone. She was able to give a meaningful life through the things she had even through those single minutes.
There really is a meaning for everything. Thank you Ma'am for giving us another inspiring story.

Actually, I can therefore say that this Human to Human relationship model is for the dying. It is because every description is somewhat looking for acceptance for a severe illness. Joyce Travelbee for me is still a great achiever though. In her young age, although died young, she still made this very useful theory. She does inspire nurses in her very own way of sharing this theory, because encoded in this theory are ways of handling patient. Also presented here are nurses stages of knowing such as first impression that provides a nurse a hint in handling patient carefully. I’ll will surely applied it for my patient someday.
It inspires the uninspired. God bless for each of us, and be very aware of our health.

Even the title the last strand is very meaningful, and it already give me hint that this story is for the dying. The lady with no hair is somewhat a great heroine and a savior. It is actually for sure is a very inspiring story. As being teenager, I can relate to the lady’s situation. I can’t imagine myself being in her shoe. Because if I were her, I don’t know, maybe I just rely everything in God. I know I am weak and my only armor is my great faith in God, so maybe I just wait for my turn, but because I’ve read this, I think I will be very doubtful. Also for me, the nurse played a very big part in the story. She served as the way to the right direction. She served as the adviser that inspired me in pursuing my chosen profession. For me, the nurse is the light for the lady. I also wondered for the name of the cancer lady because it is not being mentioned in the story. Is this something to do with Ms. Joyce Travelbee?
It is to expect for the unexpected!

THE LAST HAIR STRAND,what a great story!it is so inspirational. For me,this story tells that having an illness or having a cancer is not the end of the world.Having a cancer is a very serious thing. If you have a serious illness like this, just be positive and always think that everything on earth has its purpose.

Travelbee believed that the nursing care given to patients in these institutions lacked compassion.she felt that nursing needed "humanistic revolution-a return to focus on the caring function of the nurse-in the caring for and caring about ill persons and predicted if this did not occur, consumers would demand the services of a new and different kind of health worker.
Travelbee's theory is based on her cumulative nursing experiences and her readings rather than the evidence of a particular research study.
If nurses are to prevent this shift, they must prove to health care consumers that the time taken by the nurse to meet a patient's emotional and spiritual needs is a valuable investment.

The theory of Joyce Travelbee focus on 'cancer' maybe because she's also a cancer patient before she die in an early age.I think that her life is very lonely because she explicitly define environment in her theory. She does define the human condition and life experience by all human beings as suffering ,hope ,pain and illness. These condition can be equated to the environment. Her Human to Human Relationship Model really helps nurses to know what she apply to her patient from her original encounter to the rapport.Maybe she die in an early age but she have a great contribution to nursing.

JOYCE TRAVELBEE'S THEORY

Joyce Travelbee's theory of Human-to-human relationship model is very significant to nursing. In travelbee's theory, she stated that nurses must help sick persons, especially those who are terminally ill and those that are dying, to accept their sickness and suffering as a self-actualizing experience and find meaning behind those suffering.

Her theory can help us in teaching us and helping us in developing our ability in caring and guiding our patients to have a peaceful death. This also informs us that first impression is important between nurse-patient interaction.

According to her, nurses must show sympathy, empathy and must develop a rapport with their client in order for the interaction to be successful and to solve the problem.

This theory will surely help us to become good nurses and will prepare us in the future scenarios inside hospitals and dealing with sick people.

Thank you so much mam danela for letting us know an important theorist in the field of nursing like Travelbee. God bless.=)

During her time she was focused more on psychiatric nursing which helps the nursing profession especially concerning the behavior of the patients. She was devoted in studying and had a burden to study more and to take up a doctoral degree but unfortunately she died at a very young age.

Her theory which is the Human-to-Human Relationship Model has a great impact and help regarding on nursing practice. Because of her theory, the interaction and a professional relationship between the nurse and the patient was improved. Her theory has a great emphasis on the kind of nursing that should be given to the patients.
She concluded on her nursing that the job of a nurse is to assist an individual, family, or community to prevent or cope with the experience of illness and suffering and, if necessary, to find meaning in these experiences..

Hospice is one good example in her theory which as a nurse we should attempt to build a rapport or a good working relationship to our patient.

For me, this theory is very helpful nowadays. Because understanding the situation of the patient will help them and us as a nurse to achieve the desired wellness of our patient in a right time. It is also favorable in the patient because they will gain confidence despite of the negative situation that they are facing and they will have enough knowledge to help themselves to recover faster. And also they will learn how to accept whatever disease they have and be optimistic while facing their circumstances.

The novel "The Last Hair Strand", written by our TFN professor, Mrs. Danela Oloresisimo, is such a nice novel in a sense that it has facts that I learned. I learned that Human-to-Human Relationship Model is useful especially on hopeless patients. As a nursing student, I know that time will come that I will encounter some patients that are very hopeless because of their illness. And in this time I can use the theory of Joyce Travelbee. I can apply this so that my patient will have a better view in his life even though that he faces a great trial in his life. As a nurse, it is also important to know the situation of our patients and cure them not only in physical but also in emotional aspect...
Thus, this theory is effective and efficient in our profession..

good evening mam. I knew that Travelbees's human to human relationship is all about nurse-patient relationship that focuses more on humanistic revolution just to outcome the patient. But when I studied all about her compositions, she is always talking about illness, hopelessness, pain, sufferings, and many other weaknesses. No wonder she talked about these because she had a cancer and died at the age of 47

gud evening Mam Oloresisimo!!!

In the theory of Joyce Travelbee that known as the "Human to Human Relationship Model".I learned many things from her because she always tells us that we need to accept the tragedy, problems,or even illness in our life that we are not expecting it to happen because according to her the Lord has a reason why he is doing it to us.I also agree to her statement that a professional nurse practitioner must assist an ind'l,family or community to prevent illness and suffering.Because of her theory I learned that as being a nurse i need to my self on the shoes of others in order to have a good relationship w/ others. She also shows that the first impression will be the last. And also as a nurse i need to help the patient to accept her illness or to move on.

In the journal,The Last Hair Strands....
There is a human to human relationship wherein the nurse tells to the patient that she need to value and enjoy every mins. of her life.
I feel pity to her, because after her chemotheraphy, still she have her cancer, but she make me realize that if there is a opportunity,go on and grab it.She also teach me how to have a good relationship w/ others.

Human to Human Relationship by Joyce Travelbee is a purposeful one especially with the Nurse-Patient to have a good relationship.

By means of this theory of Joyce Travelbee it will be helpful to our practice as nursing professional to have good touch to every client. This theory also provides a the meaning of pain to every individual by means of "self-actualizing" to the condition of every patient for us to know what they feel. So that we can help them to adjust and maintain a healthy condition.

This theory contributes to fight our emotional feelings even if we encounter a cancer patient as an example we can help them even they are dying by showing them the the world is beautiful, and her/his life is a meaningful one . . .

I believe that nurse should not only focus on the physical aspect of a patient but the whole personality of the patient must be cured and that is the truth. As Miss Travelbee state the concern of the nurse is the physical, mental and spiritual life of the patient.

Her Great theory is very useful on step by step interaction by a nurse to a patient. It also tells the limitation of nurse patient-relationship. It is a great process to build trust and rapport on them.

THe novel, wow, its inspire and encourage who will read it. It tells about our self and fate. It gives trust and confidence to those who easily get down.

Just like Loyce Travelbee, she died at early age, but just like the girl on the novel she make her lost as a benefit one. She make a knowledge and theory that will use by others. It is just great that eventhough they knew that they will die, they make their death as a wonderful memory to others.

Joyce Travelbee's contribution to the evolution of nursing was recognized after her death. It is really one of the saddest thing that could happen after all the hardworks, being unable to witness the rewards of all your hardwork and dedication.

Travelbee has a great sympathy in caring for the suffering. We all know that having a cancer is torment of the body, the mind and the soul. It is really SUFFERING. I knew it so well.

I wished that I have known Travelbee and her theory before when my grandmother is still alive. It may be hard to admit that cancer runs through my family.

If I could have knew it earlier, I could have taught my family to render a care with humanistic revolution.

I was really moved by this theory most especially the interactional phases: original encounter, emerging identities, empathy, sympathy and rapport.

Thanks Ma'am for the constant passion for teaching...☺

the most ironic thing that a man could suffer from is living just to wait for the remaining strands of his life to fall...

death is really enevitable, just like Joyce Travelbee asserted... all of us will be confronted by the presence of illness and pain

what makes the difference on how we deal with it is the way we accept its presence on us and how, upon finding its true meaning, are we going to extent ourselves to other people to still become effective...

"the Last Hair strand"
...it was a mixture of irony and metaphor which was turned out to be an inspiring and generous life of a lady... as she was waiting to reach the point of total baldness, the trademark of her total deprivation from living, she was still able to share her remaining gusts of breath with Michael's family...

not only were the soil and plants had benefited from her (hehehe), she was able to fertilize the lives of three people... and this is an incommensurable deed that was worth living for...

the nurse and even the lady, in their own ways, had rendered the real essence of nursing and caressing others' lives upon establishing a rapport among other individuals... as unique and special as they were, surely, their existence and the way they touched the lives of others in need, will make Joyce travelbee give way to a beautiful and meaningful smile...

Knowing her life was very sad. Its as if that her life was so sad that she only foucses on Illness, Suffering, Pain, Hope and Hopelessness. Even though she focused on the sad part of life she did manage to find a way to express her feelings and observations through her theory.
Her theory was very efficient because it can be applied every person met another person from the original encounter where first impression lies, emerging identities where they gasp that each of them are unique individual, empathy where they feel to share something with each other, sympathy where they feel concern for their friend and lastly rapport.

"The Last Hair Strand"

The story was very cathcing the "Lady with no hair" was very kind to give her heart, eyes and money to the family that even though she experiences the traitor disease(cancer). I think she was starting to blame God for what she is experiencing when God also gave her mission in this world. When that accident happen her life have a meaning and for 6 months she became happy until her last hair strand.

"the existence of the suffering whether mental, physical or spiritual is the proper concern of the nurse"

joyce travelbee who is a nurse, educator, and writer left a remarkable legacy in this profession. she taught us that being a care provider doesn't necessary mean that we should only cure their physical sickness but most especially is the disease in the mental and spiritual life. touching theor souls can be one of our primary role to our clients and we can help them by providing and giving our helping hands to them. we can give them advices which can lessenthe pain that they are experiencing.

in this fast changing world their are many dilemmas which everyone of us are capable of. life is full of experiences whether it is positive or negative. but joyce travelbee focussed more in the not-so-happy moments such as illness, suffering, pain, hope and hopeless and etc.

as a nurse, we have the capacity to build a good rapport to our patients because we have the neccesary knowledge annd skills which will suffice to their needs.

about the journal entry that our teacher wrote and posted, it turned me into tears because of the melancholy moments that the cancer patient experienced.it was good to know that before she passed away she become happy once in her life. happiness before your death cannot be compared by all the material things and money that she had. the accident that she occured was a blessing in disguise, it taught her how to accept her condition eventhough it is hard to accept.well, i learned a lot in your article mam.

continue writing nerve wrecking pieces mam!you inspire us!

Unfortunately at the age of 47 years old, Joyce Travelbee didnt finished her doctoral degree because she died.

Although her life was too short it doesnt mean that her contribution to nursing is not enough.

The Hunan-Human relationship is abig help in the nursing community.
It is a big help for the nurses in communicating with their patients and making a therapeutic relationship between them.

After reading "the last hair strand" a novel written by my TFN instructor, i realized that indeed "life is too short"..this novel shows the "human-human relationship" of Joyce Travelbee. The doctor and the nurses kept on saying that life is a gift from God,that she should be thankful because God given her a life full of joy, accomplishments an success.
As many people said,"Live your Life to the fullest"..before im just a happy-go-lucky girl who doesnt even care about what other people feel..as i read the part of the novel that says.."I gave my light to Michael, the life to Elena and the Love and caring to Michaela Ellaine"..i also whished that i have the time and previledge to help others..i wished that i have something to prove for myself too..i dont want to have cancer,i dont want the time comes that i need to experience something just to offer my help for others..

This novel inspires me a lot to pursue my dreams and not to waste time as long as i am alive, help other people,be kind to others and most especially to thank our Lord God for giving me this life..

Joyce Travelbee is the theorists who made the Human to Human Relationship model, which talks about the relationship and interactions of the nurse and the patient to each other. The role of the nurse is to become the strength and hope of the patient in times of hardships and sufferings. The nurse is the one who make the patients comments or "pananaw" in life positive, like a patient has an aids say or suggest something good to her/ him that will make his/her feeling at ease. Joyce Travelbee is a very controversial theorists that is said to have a cancer because all of the content of her theory points about sufferings and pain.

The novel that I read was very inspiring that in every hardships and sufferings that happens to you their will always be a good part or reason why it happened. And also I am very touched with the novel for at the end the patient doesn't forgot to thank the nurse for what she have done. So I learned that when you do something good to your patient they will also repay you with a good act or action or simply they will repay you gratitude.

The life of Joyce Travelbee speaks of her willingness to alleviate the pain and suffering of her patients. Her life has found its end before she can even realized that she has contribute a lot in the nursing field because of her formulated theory, “human-to-human relationship”. Even though, she died at an early stage, her memory and life story will never fade, because her presence is in a nurse every time she will apply her concepts of caring and treating dreadfully ill patients. She clearly explains to us empathy and encourages us to go beyond this, and instead make an action to lessen the suffering of the patients.

The last hair strand is a very touching and moving novel. It does not only tells us the story of a cancer patient but the value of life, even if you are counting and waiting for its end. It shows the role of a nurse in the life of the dying. She finds way how to tell the patient that there are wonderful meanings behind death. And that opportunities are just waiting for you to unlock them. Even if the end is near, still God has his own purpose in putting us in that situation. We must only discover the true value of our precious life through good deeds.

Even though she might have done more accomplishments, she already done enough to formulate her theory and identify it to help the other generation of nurses. I viewed her theory an outlet for her to help her understand others or to help others to understand the different situations that the patients might be undergoing.
All I can say about the novel was ‘’the novel can touch the reader’s hearts’’ because it can happen in real life and the lesson is everything has a reason and each reason gives bigger importance or higher value to your life, meaning that the purpose of having a life is to help others and to be thankful that you can give others because it only means that you have a reason being here on earth.

SYMPATHY always goes beyond EMPATHY, with emapthy, one can do any act or share his/ her experience that can lessen one`s suffering . RAPPORT can be establish when you share your experience to other people. But before you empathize and sympathize, with others, you should first have ORIGINAL ENCOUNTER, and know each other first to be able to relate your self with each other. To build trust with each other.( Emerging identity).

"The last Hair Strand was a heart touching story. The girl found the real meaning of life and how to live with a purpose. Before she die, she have experienced all the beautiful things that completed her.
After reading the story, I`ve realized that material things are not the only source of happiness in this world. There are so many reasons to smile and so many things that can give real happiness.
The story teaches us to give freely and to have a positive outlook towards.BUt the most important lesson is to give light and hope to other people even if your on darkest.

I like the part when the girl was praying to God to let her witness Michaela`s first birthday and the part when she recall all the things that give her fulfillment, and How important each hair strand is.that even on her last moments, she give hope and happiness to other people.
Travelbee define Hope as the desire to gain an end or accopmlish a goal combined with some degree of expectaiton that what is desired or sought is attainable. The story is full of hope even if the girl know that her time is only limited and the end is near, still, she do not lose
hope, but she empathize and sympathize to the family and share the last months of her life.

Joyce Travelbee, one of the great nursing theorist who contributed her expertise in nursing profession and in nursing practice. She was a good psychiatric nurse, educator and a writer.
Though she died at the early age of 47, she have made concepts and ideas which truly helps nursing in many ways and thRough her magnificent concepts she have formiulated a theory which is the HUMAN-TO-HUMAN RELATIONSHIPwhich propose that "a nurse does not only seek to alleviate physical pain or rendering physical care- she ministerd the whole person. The exsistence of suffering, whether physical, mental or spiritual is the proper concern of the nurse." Travelbee also states in her theory that the nurse and the patient interrelate with each other and by her description of the purpose of nursing. The purpose of nursing is to " assist an individual, family or community to prevent or to cope with experience of illness and suffering, and if necessary, to find meaning in these experiences." She also made the interactional phases between the nurse and the patients which are the 1. original encounter
2. emerging identities 3. emphathy
4. symphathy and 5. raport

I was touch when i read the article. It was so inspiring and it made me realized that everything that happens in our lives has a purpose. We must learn to accept everything that God have given to us,just like in accepting the state of being of a person, though it's not easy to accept that we are ill or dying we have to accept it and submit ourselves to God,we must not demand more because God will never give you all that we desire but He will give you all that we deserve..

Who would know what kind of person is Joyce Travelbee. . .

Through her writings, we might knew that she is a very lonesome lady. Having a very painful disease of cancer causing her weakness of the body. It's very sad that she died young at the age of 47. . .
Her human-to-human relationship did not pass all the theory analysis. The sad thing is that after she died, years had passed when her theory had an award. But one thing I know that the significance of her theory is to help students/persons understand the meaning of illness and suffering.

"THE LAST HAIR STRAND" a very magnificent novel by our own TFN teacher, Mrs. Oleresisimo. After, reading this novel. I learned that GOD HAS A MEANING ON HOW AND WHY THINGS HAD HAPPENED. Joyce Travelbee's formulation of her theory greatly influenced the nursing field. Human-Human Relationship is primarily an experience or series of experiences between a nurse and the recipient of her care. The major characteristic of these experiences is that the nursing needs of the individual are met. In this theory, we know that the purpose of nursing is accomplished. Through this relationship, nurse and the patient attain rapport through the series of interactional phases. Original Encounter where first impression is given, Emerging Identities where relationship begins, Empathy where sharing of experiencs undergoes, Sympathy which is beyond empathy and Rapport which trust and confidence are needed.

The application of human-to-human relationship in the novel is the connection existed between the lady who’s suffering from cancer and her nurse. And because the lady was really intact in her condition, it had an effect to her behavior which become improper, and her visions in life also changed because of the feeling of sufferings and hopelessness within her. In response, there comes the role of the nurse to understand why the lady was acting that way and it is also the role of the nurse to her own way to help decrease the stress that the patient feels.

One thing is that “satisfying one’s life by doing good things to other while we can”. In the short novel, the lady who suffered cancer had already found the importance of her life before she died, from where she had seen that the value of helping others did made a difference on her life where she regain the love and care on others so as to her life which was a before a full of hatred and hopelessness life caused by her sickness. And through that, a great change had occur the way she sees her own condition, where in the negative thoughts that existed on her before are now full of positive thoughts and good things which she had developed and seen from different ways.

And for me, I think the main focus of the author on the story is that, “finding or somewhat discovering the significance on little things up to big things that you have in life, its essence and values, by chances”, which means, I think God finds His own way to give a person a chance to make his/her life worth-living for which are interconnected with other’s fate. Meaning, once God gave you a chance to make your life be better, you must grab that opportunity and use and respect the instruments that He gave you to fulfill the emptiness within and don’t let it just come before you because chances are very much unpredicted. All of a sudden, it’ll just come to you, and these good chances cannot be seen just in our naked eye but “in a way we open our soul and our heart as we try to accept in our lives”.

Joyce Travelbee spent her 47 years in this world to the fullest. Even though she died at this very young age, she made a great contribution in the nursing profession. She completed her BSN Degree at Louisiana State University on 1956 and after 3 years, 1959, she completed her Master of Science Degree in Nursing at Yale University. She had published books, articles and journals during her times.

Travelbee came up with a theory that was influenced by her education and practice in charity institutions. For her, a person does not only need physical care but a person should also meet spiritual and emotional stability.

In the journal reading, "THE LAST HAIR STRAND", the application of Joyce Travelbee's Human-to-Human Relationship Model, the nurse helped the patient look at the positive view of her life. Despite of the fact that the person is suffering from cancer, until his very last breath all he can think about is to help other people. The role of the nurse in this situation is to help the patient accept what he or she is going through.

I know how it feels to be a cancer victim or how it feels to go through chemo therapies because my own sister also suffered from this kind of a situation... ='c

This is also applicable to the cancer patients because this will help cancer patients to accept their illness. The theory of Joyce Travelbee is very applicable in the field of nursing.

i think the life of joyce travelbee is not that happy at all because as i notice her theory is all about sufferings. even in her environment she defines it as the environment with a full of sufferings, hopelessness and all negative things that a cancer patient experience. but in spite of that, her theory is still useful and have a great use in our nursing profession.

As i read the journal, i can relate easily.i felt that i am the one who is experiencing that kind of illness.yes it is really it is that cancer is really a traitor that once you have known it,you cannot do anything but to wait for your time. i almost cry in reading it but as a nurse i should control my emotion.and as a nurse we must know how we should tell to our cancer patient that she have cancer.we must teach them how will they accept their illness and how will they improve themselves in spite of having that kind of illness. i really get touched in this journal.i honestly can say that until now,i am still affected by that story.it is really striking.i really do not know what to say but as a part of our recitation i have to say something about it. i admire the cancer patient in the story because she is really a brave one.she still do something good during in her last 6 months and until she died she is still doing good things here on earth and i define her acts that it is self-actualizing.

i thank joyce travelbee for having us this theory.because she really do great things in our nursing profession even though she died at her young age.

The journal is the application of joyce travelbee's theory and also somewhat similar to her life. It said to be that travelbee died because of cancer that's why her concept was more on suffering, illness, hopelessness and pain. Her theory human-to-human relationship model helps a lot in nursing profession especially it is applicable to a cancer patient. Tyhe journal was inspiring and it melts my heart. It shows travelbee's concept of suffering ,illness and etc. and despite of the womens sickness she still love her life even though she knows that she will die soon because she knows that GOD has a purpose..

Life of Travelbee:

her life is miserable for it was full of hurts and aches. It tooks lots of questions to be answered which made her theory not well-organized and not well-known compare to other theories. i felt sad and have regrets about her life because her intellect and knowledge about Nursing not been utilized for purposeful reasons. For me, if she lives longer, her theory was really accepted for it offers lots of learnings being applied to applications, critical thinking and decision making of each nurses.

Human to Human Relationship theory:

This theory was of great importance like others. For it influenced the experiences in Nursing education and practice in charity institutions. It focuses on Nursing care which a nurse must render. its main function is to help overcome patient's heart felt illnesses where the nurse seeks way on how to convince her client understand his/her situation. It also strenghten the interaction between nurse and patient which contribute to a harmonious relation. Which means, nursing harmony will promote to an interdependence relation, creating one goal between them for the benefits of health conditions for patients and satisfactory to the nurse.

Last Hair Strands:

this story is definitely and really inspiring not only for my part but also for all who read this. Lots of values will be taken which essential and useful to day to day activities. Inspite of being a miserable story (for a girl died cause of cancer), it influences my whole mind, body and soul that "to die" is not to be fear and mourn but its more on readiness and acceptance. We all know, that our life is borrowed from God and soon, all of us will die with no exact dates. God gave us life "for us to enjoy, explore and experience everything He had been created. So, "death" is not time to "Grieve" but a time to search for "Worthy Deeds", which rendering cares, helps to our beloved brothers and sisters who have been defeated in this natural world. "Death is not the end but rather, the Birth of new life to come....

Joyce Travelbee’s model is one that I like most because of what her model contain. She stated that we nurse or future nurse should help the patient not only to accept and find meaning in their illness but also to use it as a self-actualizing life experience. It helps the patient and the family to understand whatever happens in life, that there is a purpose in every obstacle that we encounter. It’s just a way of God to make us stronger. My experience is much related to what Travelbee is saying. I have an aunt who died because of cervical cancer. I admit that at first, it’s hard for her and harder for us to accept that she have that kind of disease. But because we really trust God, we learn to understand His purpose for us. I believe in the saying that “God takes away if He has something better to give”.
The story of The Last Hair Strands really touches my life. It’s a very inspiring story. If I will put my situation to the girl in the story, I will also felt the same. I know how difficult and how pain it can give to the patient and to the family if once they knew that one of them have a cancer. Sometimes, the patient came to the point to asked and question God “Why she/he is?” as what the girl did in the story. But don’t they think that it is better? It is because it is much harder to see another person who suffered from it. It can break one’s heart because of too much pain. God is really different and great. In the story, He make a way or a situation to make the girl find meaning in her illness and that is when an accident happen by their car. When she witnessed a crime, a victim of hit-and-run. Maybe by that that time, God made the girl to realize her real purpose in this world and that is to help other people who suffered harder than her.

Joyce Travelbee her Human to human relationship model is homologous to Interpersonal Relationship model of Hildegard Peplau wherein they both give emphasize the importance of COMMUNICATION. But her idea about Empathy was really a big help for us to understand on what the patients feelings or what situation he/she undergoing. With this we can help the patient to lessen their sufferings. And eventually find meaning in thier illness.

About THE LAST HAIR Strand was a touching and a good novel. After reading this novel it "awaken" both my mind and HEART. The message of this novel is for us to keep in mind that even if you have an illness or disease it is not hindrance if you really want to help other people. I was figured out that everything that happen in our life has a reason. We must find way and accept it with all heart.

The interactional phases of human to human relationship model of Joyce Travelbee is really helpful to promote a good interventions between the nurse and the patient. For the first phase the original encounter it signs for the first impression of each which is very helpful in order to perceives by each other. The emerging identities fortells about the uniqueness of each that the strong bond of relationship is beginning to form.Empathy is the ability that must possess because it is the sharing of the persons experience and it really help to desire to understand another peson.Sympathy goes beyond empathy and access when the nurse desires to alleviate the cause of patients illness or suffering. And lastly it good to have a rapport that is really need in order to relate the nurse and the sick person in relating as human being to human being.By the help of all these interactional phases it helps to easily get one another goes deeply relationship and therapeutic.

Joyce Travelbee‘s “Human-to-Human Relationship Model” aims to assist the patient in coping with his illness or situation. Her theory is very significant in making the patient at ease with himself and with dealing with the circumstances of his present situation. Building a good relationship towards the patient comes in very handy, because this will serve as a foundation for a positive point of view in the patient’s side that will lead to more preferable results.

Travelbee’s theory is very useful in the nursing profession, especially in those cases that the patient feels useless because of his incapacities.

But it’s just disappointing that she died at an early age, she may have done more great things if she had lived longer….

Thanks Ma’am, for sharing the story of “The Last Hair Strands”, I find it quite inspiring and full of values. The theory of Travelbee is clearly depicted in the novel; the young lady found meaning in her last days, she realized that even in the state of having cancer she can be of help to others. With the help of the nurse that young lady had fulfilled her dreams and she had prolonged the life of others in return for the self fulfillment she had achieved. (…I really like the story,..;-)

Travelbee's Human To Human Relationship Model, is one of the most inspiring nursing theories.Eventhough she died at an early age, this work is widely used in the field of medicine that even most of the doctors in profession do not have any idea about this. I understand a lot in her simple application to practice. A nurse must place herself in the situation of the patient to understand how the patient is feeling under that situation specifically those cancer patients. Travelbee also emphasizes that physical health is not the only concern of a nurse, but the nurse must also have concern to the patiens mental and spiritual condition.

A very inspiring story. It's nice to know that this story can be connected to one of the famous nursing theorist"s theory. I know, once a hospice read this story, that hospice can tell himself/herself that everything that happens in the world has its own purpose, in God's will.

Although Travelbee lived only a short time of her life, she had a very large contribution to the nursing profession. She died at an early age of 47 but left a great help to nurses not only in her time but most especially to the nurses of today. She will always be remembered and will remain unforgotten because of her Human-to-Human Relationship model.

The Human-to-Human Relationship Model suggests that a nurse must not only seek to alleviate physical care. a nurse must consider the different aspects of a person. A nurse must administer to the patient as a whole. Travelbee described here the different encounters of a nurse-patient interaction. These encounters are very important in building the trust of a patient. From the first encounter, the nurse must have established a good relationship with the patient to the last encounter. This is very important for the nurse to help the person cope with his sufferings and to find meaning in his life.:)

There are rumors that Travelbee died because of cancer. This was predicted so because of the content of her theory. In her writings, she always talked about empathy and she always puts emphasize on sufferings and pain.

The Last Hair Strand, a very good novel, serves as a very inspiring story for patients who suffer cancer..

Just like what the cancer patient do. She she loses hope and thought that there's no way to live. But when the tragedy comes that she encounter she felt that many people needed help than she does. This theory of hers is very applicable to the cancer patient and to the sick person because they can relate on it. In the case of the “lady with no hair” relating to human-to-human relationship model, the patient found the reason why she got that kind of sickness with an inspiring words of the nurse that there are so many ways to be valuable... Joyce Travelbee and her theory Human-to-Human Relationship Model focus the nursing care as a some of a whole person. The proper concern of her care was not only in the health but also in spiritual, physical and mental well being.

Joyce Travelbee was a great influenced in the field of nursing care. At a young age of her death (47) she contributed a lessons in which teach us on how to deal to the patient who are ill and sick. Although few of the her concepts passed the analysis of formulating a theory, still her theory was greatly influenced by her experiences in nursing education and nursing research.

For me she was a brave nurse to fight her illness and face her death at that very young age of 47. She spent her life on analyzing and understanding the proper care of a nurse to the patient. She didn’t want anyone to worry about her and to know about her illness she was suffering.

The Human-to Human Relationship Model is useful until now because it has the ability to describe, explain, predict and control a phenomena. Like Peplau’s theory, she focuses her theory about the relationship of a nurse and a patient. She assumed that a nurse should helped the patient to understands that he/she is sick and finding the meaning of their illness and suffering helped the people to accept that and gave a brighter side of her being ill or sick.

Like other theorists, Joyce Travelbee have many significant contribution to nursing profession. Her Human-to-human relationship model uses by the nurse to assist the patient, to prevent and to cope with the experience of illness and suffering. It helps the patient not only to understand but also to accept the illness and use it as a self-actualizing life experience. The person must find meaning to his or her death. The Last Hair Strands is a must read novel because it teaches that in every life in this journey has its own purpose to fulfill. In everyday, as we live in this world we must learn that everyone has its own role to pursue whether we don’t expect it to happen. As the story taught me that somehow even a small things in our lives has a meaning. We don’t need to focus on our own life but rather we must be observant enough on what is happening in our environment. We must be aware on the others problems and help them to find solutions to it. We are not only the people who are suffering from different challenges in this life. Some of them are really in huge chaos in their lives. All we need is acceptance and face that God will not give us these trials if we can’t fix it. God shows us the way to be more valuable to our self and find ways to create other dreams to succeed!

Using the theory I can help the patient to recover from the emotional pain that he/she suffers which is a very excruciating pain to deal with.

I can help my patient to set goals on how he/she can develop a good self to help him/her happy even for the last days of her life. He/She can feel that he/she has made a good use of her life.

the story, "the last hair strands" of ma'am danela really touched my heart. i'm glad she had a peaceful death and that she didn't questioned God for what happened in her life. really God have reasons for everything and her life has its purpose and that is to help the needy ones. at lest before she died, she learned how to make her life meaningful. a very inspiring story that will be remembered by everyone

good evening mam!

based on what on what i have read about Joyce Travelbee, she conceptualized the Human-to-Human Relationship Model. I learned and I realized that a good relationship not only to patient but with other people is very important. We can relate ourself to other people.

Joyce Travelbee's theory explain us how can we compare our own self to others in able to relate with them to give them some advice and render some care. First we should know him or her to give us trust to help them. We can be able to explain to them and accept what is the reality about there life.

Travelbee's experience in initial psych nursing practice at a Catholic charity hospital led her to believe that the care given in these types of institutions lacked compassion. She felt nursing needed a "humanistic revolution" and a renewed focus on caring as central to nursing--she warned that if this didn't happen, consumers might seek a "new and different kind of health care worker." Travelbee's ideas have greatly influenced the hospice movement.

According to Joyce Travelbee, "A nurse does not only seek to alleviate physical pain or render physical care- she ministers to the whole person. The existence of suffering, whether physical, mental or spiritual is the proper concern of the nurse".

Joyce Travelbee, Human to Human Relationship Model is the therapeutic use of self is the ability to use one’s personality consciously and in full awareness in an attempt to establish relatedness.

Travelbee's life story, was very sad because she died early, but despite of that she was able to contribute a theory in nursing profession. Every time I read her theories, I can feel the deep emotions within each statement because her theories were all about sufferings, hopelessness, pain and illness.
Her theory taught me to overcome my weaknesses. I think, if she had lived a bit longer, she would have more time to developed, improve, and impart her theories.
That's all thank you.

Our perpetuating subsistence comes to an endpoint wherein we encounter moribund and eventually death.

The splendiferous short story featured, took me to glimpse the complexity and difference that life can bring to anyone. A lady of success faced the greatest bout she would ever meet and living with cancer is indeed a Brutus.

However, seeing her perceive that there is something worthy about her life made her the depiction of Joyce Travelbee's character of an individual in pain and suffering.

The lady who savvied that she must make an eleemosynary deed by helping Michael's family who's more needy made her hands generous. She aided the family under her tutelage.

Self-actualization makes the prioritizing effort that we must understand it for us to view that life is meaningful.

Good Evening...

Human-to-Human relationship of Travelbee about to the compassion need to rendered to the patient offering the nursing care. I think if Travelbee extended her life like Nightingale and Peplau, her theory will be much recognize and introduce to others. I find this theory as very important in toda'ys nursing nursing in a sense that nursing today needs a humanistic revolution.

Comment about the last hair strands:

Applause!!!

Actually, i have printed that page to have a great reflection on it and also to share with others. This story about a woman who has cancer, made her life very meaningful through to the deeds she gave and live life to the most essence of it and the purpose of life.
I can compare it to the book that i have read "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. All those things that will complete life and the essence of life is live for you itself and how life will be in favor for you, but how you will serve God and others.

A heart-pounding story of you Ma'am..Thank you..
I have already shared it with my boardmate And he said "Ang Ganda,.ah ah kakatuwa naman."

Thank you very much,.I wish that many can read that story..

Joyce Travelbee, regarded as the
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Theory of
Human-to-Human relationship.

...she defined the term of illness, suffering, pain, hope and hopelessness from the dictionary and not on her own words, and I noticed that almost all of her definition was focus on the feeling of displeasure of an individual.

In the Humam-to-human relationship,it starts with the Original encounter, where you must give your best, because they said that first impression last, after that is the emerging identities where the bond of the relationship is begginng, then the empathy and sympathy where the sympathy goes beyond empathy and occurs when the Nurse wants to lessen the suffering of the patient, and lastly the rapport.

In the Journal Reading...
It was a very touching story.

...everytime I heard the word CANCER,there's a fear running out my mind, because having a cancer is not easy you will feel sometimes you are worthless, but I noticed that most of the cancer patient did not lose hope, and in the story of The last hair strands, the main character did not lose hope.

...the story makes sense that material things is not the only means of happiness, and also God has a purpose why she had a cancer.

The story emphasizes the theory of Joyce Travelbee, there is the illness, pain, sufferings, hopelessness and in the end of the story there is still hope.

thank you po Ms. Danela

the story of the last hair strands is a very touching one.it gives & portrays the real meaning of life and death.life is meaningful if we live it to the fullest & if we do things that will make us happy & complete.
if someone is dying it does not mean that he is useless like in the story even if she is suffering because of cancer she found the meaning of her life by helping others.travelbee defined life as suffering but in the story the lady w/ no hair found that all that happened in her life have meanings and it gave way to show her the real meaning of her life.

human to human relationships theory is great influence to the nursing community's healthcare system. Through the aid of this theory, nurses would have created a great break through in terms of nurse-patient relationship, which in fact is a serious problem in whole healthcare system.

because of this theory, nurses can confront the difficulties of this matter
